hiya guys,problems with 944 , put into garage 4 a while running, tried to start up ,,,no spark ,jeezman,any ideas plz........
 
Behave, Simon! [;)] Is there definitely no spark? Have you eliminated a fuel delivery issue? How long has the car been parked for?
 
More details please! What was it doing, any previous signs, is the DME relay new, when were the ignition parts last changed, what model is it, that sort of thing. [:)]
 
hiya guys thanks for reply,,,its a bit of a mystery to be honest,,its a 2.5 lux 85, was running fine and well, bout 18 months ago, parked it up in garage, playtime on bikes,,,so i recently tried to bring it back out,after a little investigation, no spark at all,so changed ,dme ,still no good so,,,stuck............
 
I honestly had no idea what the OP was talking about! This isnt an unknown problem and its hard to know where to start. Personally, Id go to Halfords and buy a set of Laser tools red HT indicator lamps. There are four in the pack and you clip them onto the plug and the end of the HT line - try to start your car and see whether they all light up. Now for £12 you know whether its a fuel or ignition problem. Simon
 
hi,,forgot to mention new battery bought so thats all good, just been tinkering with it, no fuel reaching cylinders and no spark at plugs , changed dme relay .....soooooooooooo ? over to u guys ....
 
update...no noise from fuel pump when cranking, tacho needle not bouncing ,,if this means anything at all, not really sure how to by pass dme ? soz guys ....its proper doin me tits in......it was running really good too before i put it away.....
 
This sounds as though its seriously/properly f*cked. In this circumstance Id suggest Googling Clark's Garage and following the diagnostic procedure there. If both the spark and the fuel are missing then Id suspect the DME (Bosch engine management ECU), presuming that youve absolutely ruled out the DME relay. Even then Id still want to check the ECU on a similar year known-running car to be certain, as theres so much peripheral to it that is more likely to fail. DME relays (actually two separate relays within one housing, one for the DME/ECU and the other for the fuel pump whichs switched on by the ECU when the engine is cranking) on the electrical side and the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel side are always to two most likely suspects, but sometimes ignition can be affected by poor maintenance with some very pitted and worn distributor caps being seen, even though they and the rotor arm are both cheap. Less cheap are the plug leads, and because of this theyre usualy in a very poor state, although none of this really helps you. Clark's Garage's diagnosis will help though, and if you need an ECU then make sure that you buy one with exactly the same Porsche or Bosch part number on. Simon

Simon +1 on the Clarks Garage .. OP Sorry to be blunt but you are going to have to do a bit of legwork yourself.. Theres no point in us making suggestions when we dont have the car in front of us... Is she a square dash or oval dash ...? Was the garage damp...? Is there fuel in her...? Is there an aftermarket alarm in it...? Get the circuit diagram and work through it in a logical fashion.. I can think of at least 23 reasons why the car wont start and there is absolutely no point in giving them out as this could throw you off course ! Problems that other lads had before mean nothing - you need to go in and use your head Start with fuel .. Disconnect the fuel supply hose to the rail.. bypass the DME relay and switch on the ignition - Is there fuel coming up...? Yes/No ...Is there deffo no spark....? And so on until you find it Gather the evidence - Keep asking yourself Why and as I said before on many an occasion never ever assume. If you assume then you make an Ass of U and Me... Just go in with an open mind - gather the evidence and dont go swapping bits willy nilly "because thats why Joe Bloggs 944 would not start" .. No two problems are the same ! Keep us posted on how you are getting on....!
 
Hmmmm what a nightmare. Having worked on these I would say if you aren't getting fuel or spark then try checking the crank and timing sensors. You may have a bad connection or dislodged them when working on the car. If the DME receives no signal from either sensor then it will not create a spark fuel? You know where these are? Located at the back of the engine over the top of the flywheel. Take them out and clean the tips. They are magnetic and can pick up metal particles reducing the gap between them and the flywheel sensors. Also check the earth points from bulkhead to engine. The connection point for the engine is under the heater control and may of corroded over time? You say you have a 85 car it's either a square or oval dash model. If you have the earlier square dash then check the fuses are clean and dont forget the auxillary fuse box as this controls the fuel pump. The 85> cars have the fuse box under the bonnent again check the fuse for corrosion. Check all the connections and plugs to all the sensors/airmeter etc these corrode and can cause the same issue. Finally the worst bit. Get under the car at the rear and check you have voltage to the fuel pump. If so has the pump seized with time? Hope these pointers help you? Good luck
 
+1 re' the sensors-although I would recommend initially just splitting the 2 Bosch connectors at the bulkhead as above-clean the contacts -put a slight angle set on the male plugs with long nose pliers-add some petroleum jelly & reconnect firmly wiggling them as you click together.Then recheck whether you get a "flicker on the tacho needle before stripping further.
