944 Turbo.....

My S2 had an alarm and standard immobiliser fitted when I bought it. I put another Cat 1 alarm/immobiliser in as well, and built a small interface between them, so both alarms work from the same keyfob (both are activated and de-activated with one button) but offer separate security in their own right.

Why? Because the idea of leaving a Porsche on the streets of East London sounded like it would be very appealing to the local scumbags who steal cars. Suffice it to say that I still own it six years later, thankfully. I am confident that it would be very, very difficult to steal without the keyfob or a low-loader lorry and HIAB to carry it away with.

Ok, The day has finally arrived!! The car is ready and i'm off to JMG tomorrow late afternoon to collect him. I'm like a (very big) kid with a new toy. I just can't wait!![8D][:)][8D][:)]
 
How was the drive home?! Jon mentioned that he'd made your car run far more smoothly, but he was a little concerned that maybe you would personally prefer the more animal, on-off, wham-bang-thank-you-ma'am power delivery that the car had when you dropped it off. For a mechanic/engineer such as Jon part of the problem is working out exactly what any individual client wants and likes - after all, we're all different. Some people even think 210 bhp in a 944 is enough!!!

In a nutshell, was the drive home "better" than the original drive to drop off?

Id add physical security for piece of mind Oli; probably a Disklok and a Dipol (or similar). Thisll pretty much rule out driving it away from on-road parking.

Good spot, but no - they immobilise different circuits, and at different points. I can't remember which does what off the top of my head (I have it written down), but the second alarm wasn't just installed in-line with the first one - so to speak.

Physical security would be the next thing to do, but given it's survived 6 years I'm fairly happy that it's secure. There are much more expensive cars on our street which would probably be targetted first by a thief (unless it was a thief with extraordinarily good taste!)

Oli, the gamekeeper always makes the best poacher. Youre putting yourself in the poachers position without the ganekeepers experience. Be assured that an experienced thief will go straight for the fusebox and a Cat1 alarm will be bypassed/removed within about ten minutes.

The only thing that you can do which will prevent this is to add a physical element to the alarms installation, which prevents their accessing it and the area around the fusebox where the connections are made.

You could look in the fusebox and see nothing untoward in there (apart from some new wires to run the stereo). All immobilisation is done some distance from there, and in such a way as to make it difficult to find the other end of the cut circuit wire. (It always strikes me as stupid that most alarms installers immobilise a circuit by cutting a wire in that circuit giving two cut ends, running one cut end into a black alarm wire and running another black alarm wire back to the other cut end - meaning that all you need to do to re-activate the circuit is to find this cut point and bridge the two black wires. I've done it such that this isn't the case!)

Physical security is a good idea, but more than I think (or hope!) I need. I did come across a system a while ago that worked with the ABS system such that it locked the brakes of the car on while the car was immobilised. I'm not sure how it worked - it implies that there needs to be some mechanism to apply the brakes, or possibly a valve in the brake lines to keep them applied - but it sounded fairly effective, and not all intrusive. The most offputting thing about a disklock for me is that it needs to be put on and taken off each time you use the car, and it then hangs around in the car while you are driving; in short, it's a huge hassle. I had a krooklock many years ago on my first Golf, and hated it for this very reason.

Ha,Ha. How odd? I thought he was winding me up at first! Seems like 944's get 5hit loads of alarms fitted to them for some reason! Anyway, i can't pick it up this weekend as busy working on Saturday. How annoying?![:mad:]!! So, it's decided a respray in shiney Black Porsche paint, An Apexi-avcr electronic boost controller (thanks for the input guys),what about security? Any suggestions? It will live in my locked garage and only come out on weekends when the sun shines or it hasn't rained for 24hrs. My aim is to rebuild him in full over the next couple of years. I'm not too clued up on car security so any advice would be greatly appreciated.[:)]

Car runs like a dream, silky smooth and with fantastic acceleration. A little bit of lag but we will sort all that out on the next visit or the one after! A very spirited drive home, Bournemouth to Brighton in an hour and a quarter! Stuck my boot in the loud pedal and never eased off. This 944 Turbo is superb[8D], i am so glad i bought it (Sarah bought it for my 55th birthday pressie) and got rid of the Skyline i had for seven years, and the Pulsar before that. This Porsche lark is defo the way forward and, so is Jon Mitchell's Garage. Excellent, honest,first class proffessional's! Tremendous value for money, they even chucked in a few freebies which they didn't have to do! Car's going back for visit number two in October for suspension sort out (KW V3), Uprated anti-roll bars, poly bushing, 968 MO30 brake discs and anything else i can afford at the time. Respray coming up next. I won't be taking it anywhere else that's for sure! One very happy customer indeed![:)]
