944 Turbo (The Bonnybridge Project)

Noting there's been a flurry of new owners (including a few turbos) in the last fews days... I thought I'd share some details of my recent purchase too. In a rather low key way, I bought a '91 Turbo SE from Alasdair (SULZERUK) at the beginning of April as a restoration project.

This isn't a replacement for my s2 but I really wanted to see how slow these Turbos really are compared to a decent s2 so I thought I'd see for myself. [;)]

The car has been off the road for a year or so and requires a body work overhaul. Additionally, a split hose had resulted in a very minor engine bay fire and although the car was still starting it'll be neccesary to replace a number of plastic items/cables.

149k on the clock with a comprehensively stamped service book and looked after by the same independent (Brian Millar) in Edinburgh from '94-'10. It's Linen Metallic with burgundy pinstripe interior with speaker system upgrade. Drivers seat requires a small repair only but otherwise the interior is in good shape.

I'd looked at the car a few times before taking the plunge. There wasn't much up for sale at the time and whilst I did have a decent budget set aside at the time it wasn't enough to make SCAM75 an offer he couldn't refuse for his Zermatt/Burgundy Turbo (also shown in the last photo below)!

Essentially, I was excited about a couple of things; the prospect of restoring this car to an excellent standard and learning about the car myself as the project progressed. I was quite lucky in the sense that Alasdair offered to restore this car with me (essentially this means he does nearly everything complicated and I watch, learn, lend a hand, do simple stuff - this way I can be equipped in future situations to know my way around the car).

So far, the head is off and the front of the engine has been stripped.

So, what's the plan?
The engine is looking in good shape but I'm going to take advantage of the availability of a replacement refurbed head so this will be fitted with head gasket done. Belts, rollers/tensioners, waterpump, thermostats, oil seals, full major service kit, ignition leads, refresh all the fluids etc..

A number of items have been removed (more to follow) for cleaning and powdercoating as we go.
New discs and pads all round. Alasdair will refurb the calipers.
Rear axle will be refurbished too.
Suspension will receive an overhaul.

Bodywork - I've picked up solid replacement front wings and a brand new end plate (the rear body panel above the bumper). All have suffered with corrosion. The sills aren't too bad really but they will receive some attention. Car will then get a full repaint and replacement windscreen.

To finish it off I've picked up a rather nice set of CS Forged alloys with great tyres which have been powdercoated in black.

It's going to take a number of months to complete but it will be very fresh when done. I'm not thinking too much about modifications at this point - just returning the car to an excellent original standard in the first instance.

I know a few guys at the "Scottish Meet" quite rightly raised an eyebrow at the prospect of me throwing a decent bung of money at a car which looked rather "sad" to say the least but I simply believed it would be worth it in the long run. Looking at the figures of those cars still left (ie the dwindling numbers) I'm even more convinced this is a good move although I will be keeping a very close eye on the financials as the project moves forward. I'm sure I've forgotten loads of stuff here.

Big thanks to Alasdair for his passion in taking this forward - all the more appreciated in view of him being the busiest person I've ever met!

No real pictures yet - I forgot to take some yesterday. However, here's an old one - the turbo is sitting in front of my black s2.

Coincidentally, I believe Alasdair still has a very decent late s2 (grey) - middle car in the picture below - looking for a new home.

I think mine would have been a cheaper option!!

However, how cheap you will never know. Not really wanting to part with mine after all the work that's been done it would have taken a VERY good offer. I would only have went and got a 996, got bored, then got another 250 turbo to spend another fortune on.

Good man for taking on the project. Will watch with interest.

Cheers

Stuart

I am +1 with Stuart on this one. Good turbos are definitely worth saving IMHO and it will pay off in the long run. They will be the one to own in years to come I think. I will never give up on mine and the last week has been testament to that. Good work fella [:)] I wish I had the funds to save them all but sadly I am limited to just one.

I hope not! I'm confident I didn't have a enough funds for your car otherwise I would have tried with an offer. In any event, think of all that 'spannering education' I'd have missed out on?! [:)]

Everything has it's price and so does my car! I am easily into 5 figures with my car including purchase and all parts bought/jobs done. The car wouldn't fetch that in the open market unfortunately. If I sell for top dollar in 944 terms I will be many £££'s out of pocket! :( And the buyer will have a well sorted bargain. (This would have been you for the benefit of this exercise!)

On that basis I would be very surprised if you could make a better/similar car than mine from your project for less then strong 944T money. In fact I would say it would be near impossible. Therefore if I had sold and took the hit you would have saved the hit??

Anyway, the point I really want to make is that my car means so much more to me having overseen all the many things that have been done and I have learned so much about the model along the way, which is priceless (but not really in monetary terms but you know what I mean!!). I am also more likely to keep my car for a long time due to this and I'm sure you and your project will soon develop this affinity! :)

And not only would I have lost out financially selling you my car but I would have lost out again buying another one and starting again!! So the moral of the story is I did the right thing and so now are you!

Stuart

Don't think about how much you are spending. Having met you and knowing alisdairs work standards you will end up with a stunning turbo. So who cares how much it costs. These car's value will only start to go one way(up hopefuly) and what else could you buy with the cash a Boxster? a fat beetle ( sorry 911) no way none are as good as a well sorted 44.

So wish I had the money to take on another '44 and that S2 would be the perfect progression for me but sadly my '44 is my daily drive, so envious of you being able to take on that Turbo but in the same breath so looking forward to seeing it reborn [:D] keep us upto date!

Alasdair has to be (along with a select few others) one of the most passionate people here when it comes to keeping '44's on road, just wish I could have helped save that 16v that he bought a short while back [&:]

As I say though keep us up to date on progress

Paul, it is still sitting outside the garage. Make me an offer! It is not all that bad and would be a good car when done! Would rather it was saved than getting chopped!
Alasdair

Hi Steve, I spotted the Gold Turbo at the first 'Scottish Meet' and had thought it would be a good project, obviously depending on purchase price, although never got round to asking more details, like you must have. Next time I was at Alasdair's he told me you had bought it. Not that I would have the funds anyway. Anyhow good luck with it, and as we all know Alasdair is the Man to help you along the way and certainly willing to show you how and advise, and also has loads of parts lying around. To sum up I think you have made a wise move as you will have a well sorted and checked over Turbo when done, where you could have bought one for lots of money and THOUGHT it was good sorted example(with the exception of selected few, like Stuart's).
Stuart you would be mad to sell and would only regret it.
Anyway, when are we next meeting up? soon I hope, before we all start going on holiday.

Cheers Alan.

Yeah get a meet organised Alasdair, preferably when I can make it! [:D]

You are definitely right Alan, I did not spend all that time, money and effort to sell my car at a loss.............hmm, what was I thinking!!

Stuart

Fish and Chip run on Wednesday with PCGB leave Sherbrooke at 6.30 and head for Troon if anyone fancies it, I'm going. See Scotland section for details.

Alan.

look forward to hearing more about this, you certainly did a good job of hoovering it [:D]

It's definitely a worthwhile thing to do, OK maybe not as a financial investment but definitely for the experience and satisfaction. If I had the cash and space I'd be tempted myself, mind you I always end up staring at that blue 911 too...

Quick update on this one - it's been a while! [:D]

Refurbished head, new water pump, belts, rollers, HT leads, injector seals and a whole other bunch of things done and - YES - car is running again! Thanks Alasdair. [;)]

Overall, still a huge amount of work to do but this is a huge step forward for now....

Progress at last Steve, thought you'd forgotten about it, catch up soon, possibly at a 944 meet at Alasdair's?

Alan.

Tis running very nicely now apart from peeing petrol all over my garage floor last night. The return pipe under the wheel arch liner had decided to split under the clamp rubber (as usual!!) so a handily placed petrol can enabled the car to run for a bit. Certainly needs engine mounts but sounded very quiet after the first 5 minutes for the tappets to fill. No smoke at all on startup and a nice clean idle. Fuel pipes and brake pipes next along with all the rest!
Alasdair
