hi,

i've heard that the haynes manual is pretty dire..is this true and if so is there an (affordable) alternative??

Avoid it at all costs. Factory manuals are available online if you look around a little. If there isnt a link to them here, then there probably will be on TIPEC. Clark's Garage is also a useful reference with guides and information on a most common faults and repairs.
