944 Turbo S Engine Rebuild Thread

the medium blacks were very effective too.
You bet they were adequate with an engine probably as sluggish as a 924 2L auto without even the same throttle response :p
I can't even begin to understand how you ran for that long an engine that must have felt terribly unresponsive at any level of load and that your tuner apparently did not even pick up on this... sort of explains too why the std intercooler did not seem to feel that restrictive. Anyway, you may now prepare for the slightly tedious process of upgrading whatever will be needed to balance out the various restrictions that should slowly show their ugly heads, starting with the intercooler.
Keep us updated.

I drove mine earlier today, enjoying the empty morning roads typical of a January 1st... Scared myself like never before... yet I am considering trying an even larger turbo for some glory dyno runs 🥳

Go on then - tell me what intercooler suggestion you’d make that will fit - given I’m running aircon too?

Some custom unit like mine taking most if not all of the frontal area available would be nice but the fabricator said that making a slimmer core (because of the A/C condenser behind) will not give the room for 600 hp... Are you sure you need A/C in the tropical country you live in :)

So 322mm 964 turbo discs don't require rings? I notice there are 2 different Lindsey caliper adaptors for 322 and 330mm discs also.

If you look at the descriptions for the LR caliper adaptors they all state that they are not for M030 equipped cars. M030 equipped cars (as mine is) have different front hubs and the thicker centres are the same size as the Big Red equipped cars hence no requirement for centring rings at all, irrespective of disc.

None of the pictures of any Lindsey kit has centering rings in them. And It's much cheaper to source the discs and calipers here.

As I don't have them, I've never paid much attention to the MO30 hubs/brakes.
What year is your car? All 89/90/91s came with M030 hubs and brakes.

So what have you been up to Eldavo? I can't wait to hear how you get on now that the cams are where they should be.

I guess you could say I be just been “fannying around”!

Drained the coolant and removed an oil line to remove the original fans - super heavy and one of them was really stiff blowing the odd 25amp fuse too.

I ordered a couple of modern brushless 11” fans from ebay for under £50 the pair with a much higher CFM rating and a current draw of under 7amps and removed them from their housings to fit into the original shroud. Scott C on here had some adaptor brackets laser cut a few years ago and they had been sitting on my shelf since:

The bracket enabled me to bolt up the new fan motor inside the original housing and with its mounting points. Scott doesn‘t have the file for these any more but I made a card template to send up to Colin D who is going to get some cut locally to him so I may have a source on these in the future:

Fan mounted, they run either direction by changing the polarity but you do need to flip the blades to match as well, with them set to pull and the blades in the right orientation these bad boys will cool your ankles from behind the car:

Fully mounted and changed the plugs on the end to fit the factory connections just to check everything properly - I’ll fit some proper 2-pin econoseal waterproof connections once I know everything works with the different relays and fan speeds, etc.:

Probably 2-3” more clearance at the back too - given how close some of my water and oil hoses run and sometimes too close - this is a very good thing:

Just finishing up a coffee before I go put them back in!

Are your fans the same as the 968 ones?
Might be an alternative source for me too if mine ever seize up.

Very interesting. The fans on mine are original and with 260k miles I cannot believe they will still last that many years. I read many years ago on RL that there was no more powerful fans than the std ones but that was a long time ago and I am very interested to hear of your finding with those. It always irks me a little bit when idle speed dips when the fans kick in in traffic, and they always run in fast speed as the previous owner ditched the low speed resistor pack.

I’ll let you know about the adaptors when I’ve spoken to my guy - but after a day of testing and refitting they are very efficient!

Engine runs fine - in the garage, still on my QuickJack.

Did an oil and filter change yesterday and fitted a temperature sensor in the sump plug. Was a bit of a head scratcher until I remembered that the pinout diagram for the ECU is mirrored on the plug itself 🤦‍♂️

Wheels and splitter are still away being painted, I get those back next week. I don’t fancy going out in the cold and wet with my other wheels on with track tyres (plus I’m away this weekend so I can wait).

Understood.
I risked mine out early on Sunday morning in temperatures just above freezing but dry roads, the back end wants to live its own life at anything above half load in 4th gear whilst inlet temp would not even reach 10°C... I love turbo weather.

Literally got the wheels back this evening - once the pretendy bolts turn up I can fit them back together.

Busy weekend as away next week so fingers crossed for decent weather the weekend after that for some fun 🤩
