944 - Keeping the rear hatch closed!

Hi,

I've recently purchased my first Porsche, an '86 944 2.5 Lux. It came with a full service history and I love it!
I've had it fully serviced, so am ready to get out and enjoy it. Just one thing stopping me though. The rear hatch keeps opening on it's own while I'm driving it! I've fitted brand new hatch pins (mushroom shaped heads/threaded stems). Is it possible the catch/receivers have worn out and not holding the hatch down?

I've tried several times with adjusting the pins - length with which they stick out from the hatch - and also made sure the round receivers are moving in and out while having the hatch up and moving the key in the lock.

I'm not in favour of buying second hand receivers, they could be worn as well. Are brand new ones available?

Any help/advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

I bought new pins from Max at FrazerPart Porsche some years ago for around £14 the pair and the receiving locks I bought from Porsche GB delivered £43.

Thanks mate.
Yep, I got my pins from Max at FrazerParts.
Has Porsche GB got an online shop? I'll get a pair of receivers.

No, there is no Porsche GB online shop. Just ring any Porsche dealer parts department, as far as I know they all do mail order. I generally get my stuff from OPC Hatfield, just because I built up a relationship with them doing my body restoration and respray, but other people here have good relationships with other places too.

Cheers mate. I've found a local-ish Porsche dealer and ordered my parts.[:D]

Did you centralise the receivers after fitting your new pins? undo the two 10mm nuts on each until they just move (Not too loose!), then open and close the hatch a few times-this pulls them into the correct position. Then tighten the nuts. Worked for me.

OP: be very careful not to confuse Porscheshop with Porsche Cars GB or their dealers, usually referred to as OPCs, although I think that theyve re-branded themselves as Porsche Centres now.

Anyway, read between the lines... :thumb:

Make sure that the mechanism isn't just gummed up, that's all it was on mine and a generous 'cleaning' with WD40 and a regrease sorted it out nicely. They are a bit of a dirt trap.

you can adjust the extent to which the receivers open and close by lengthening or shortening the rods which run from the motor to the receiver

Thanks for all the info above, very helpful.
I've sprayed WD40 on the receivers and given them a good clean out, plus tried centralising them but it still pops up. Didn't know you could tamper about with the length of the rods, I'll have a look at that until my new receivers arrive early next week.

After fitting new hatch struts to my car I found that one side of the hatch would come open on bumpy roads. I solved the problem by cleaning the locking receivers, lubricating with copper slip and then slightly lengthening the pin on the side that kept popping open.
That has seemed to fix the problem.

unhook the rods and turn one way to shorten and the other way to lengthen. That will probably solve your problem. You probably need the receiver to open further as your bolt is probably not clicking all the way into the receiver, and locking in place.

Rear hatch problem solved for good, hopefully. Brand new Porsche locking receivers.
Been out on a test drive over some bumpy roads, hatch stayed closed. Phew! that's a relief.

I had a set of these fitted to my Car they have the single pawl......

I then brought new ones from Porsche 944.538.956.00 and .955.00 they were only £22.69 each but they have 2 pawls

these look pretty good, although they are more for fixing latch squeak
