944 - Fuel Tank Replace (leaking)

Hi all,

This is actually my first post here, please be kind in my hour of need.

I noticed recently that my 944 (1988 2.5 lux) is leaking fuel from the tank area, a local garage confirmed this today.

Does anyone have a link to a 'how to' on removal? Also links to various sources of new/recon fuel tanks that I may have missed would be appreciated.

I hope the gearbox doesn't have to come out to gain access to the tank?

What would you expect to be charged in labour (hours wise) for this job.

Also while they were looking at they noticed the gearbox is leaking, without further investigation I'm not sure where exactly from. Doesn't anyone have experience of what it's likely to be.

Cheers

Jonathan

Welcome!
Since your car is an 88 you have a plastic tank which is generally more robust, so I would say it's very unlikely the actual tank is leaking. I think it's much more likely that the pump, or rubber/metal lines in the area are leaking.
I would take the metal cover off that will expose the rubber hose coming out of the tank (1 or 2 screws IIRC). Then look at the tray where the fuel pump sits and follow the pipework to the filter and see if it's wet. You can clamp the hose and then remove/inspect the fuel pump and hoses.
It could also be the return line which is a rubber hose that goes over the tank. It can be replaced without dropping the tank, you can see the end of it through the access hole in the boot.
Removing the tank means dropping the transmission and the rear suspension so you want to make sure the other stuff is eliminated first!
If you're not doing the work yourself going to a specialist who knows the cars well could save you a fortune compared to dropping the tank unnecessarily.

I'll check the fuel lines this week. Sounds like I should replace them with Nylon variants or similar non ferrous material.

Cheers

Jonathan
