944 Engine Identification

Okay, trying to find the correct parts for my engine before I order them (specifically an Oil Seal Kit and a Timing Belt Kit), but I can't determine exactly what Engine is fitted to my car.

It was built 08 Dec 1986, is a UK RHD and the original build sheet gives the Engine Type as a M44/05 (later 8v NA engine). The original Engine number on the build sheet is 41H00476 which agrees with this however...

When my local garage tried ordering parts from Porsche using the VIN the wrong parts turned up. When I looked closer at the actual engine number it reads M44/MA, which as far as I can tell is a replacement/remanufactured Factory engine:

My dilemma is if it has had an M44/04 or earlier engine fitted to replace the original M44/05, then there's a load of part numbers which will be different. How can I definitively tell? Here are a few more photos:

Cover reads 944 105 041 00

Any help appreciated before I go throw a wedge of cash for the wrong parts!

The only difference I can think of with later engines is the timing belt tensioner and oil pressure relief valve.

What parts are you looking at purchasing?

I've spoke to Justin at Waleswood, what an amazingly helpful and knowledgeable guy.

I'm after the balance and timing belt kits, and a front end Oil Seal Kit, hes sorted me out thanks.

The engine block number is still a mystery though...

I think you were spot on with your original assessment, it is a replacement block supplied by Porsche, I guess you don't have any receipts showing a replacement block? You could enquire at your local Porsche dealer, they normally ask for a V5 in your name and may be able to look if there is any record on the Porsche system.

I popped into Porsche Roost, they've got an amazing heritage workshop.

100% correct, M44/MA is a factory replacement engine sent to the UK dealer for fitting. They can't confirm when but did confirm its a M44/05, so mystery solved. They've sent a request to Stuttgart and are confident they'll at least be able to find a build and despatch date if it was ordered against my VIN.
