944 - Engine/gear stick jerks when coming off the throttle at speed!

Afternoon,
I was out over the weekend in my car (944) travelling down the A3 and found the car (engine and gear stick) jerking everytime i came off the throttle! It happens whether i am doing 10mph or 70mph, this is new as i drove the car the previous weekend with no issues.
Can anyone advise on what the issue could be?

Yes the Engine, Gearbox and the telegraph pole that 's bolted in between them is all Rubber mounted, the Gearshift is bolted to the torque tube and hence if any of these bushes are excessively
worn the whole thing will move forwards and backwards.

Is your car an early (2 Gearbox side mounts) or later 944 (1 Central mount)?

The stick does move some even on a car that's not excessively worn, get it up on a ramp and inspect the engine and gearbox mounts, the Gearbox linkage also wears with age / mileage and this also could be slopping about from side to side? The gearstick has 2 bolts holding it down to the torque tube they are not common for coming loose but might be worth a check..
The Nylon Cup at the base of the gearshift wears.

Even a Race car's shift will move a bit:

Thanks Steve, good to know and will look into it!

Local garage seems to think its the clutch but the car is still strong through all gears with no slips so not sure it's that!

Classic symptoms of the rubber centred original clutch finally giving up. I'm guessing it does the same when you get back on the throttle i.e. jerking?

Thank you.
No it doesnt jerk when i push back on the throttle only when lifting off! Thats whats confusing.

The clutch is strong but the garage explained the symtons as you have saying it could be the rubber spacers that have failed......expensive rubbers if i need to change the clutch!!

Thank you.

The gear stick has always moved around and certainly when coming off the throttle but it really noticably jerks on lift off but not when i push back on the throttle! Thats whats confusing.

What are your thoughts, what i dont want to be doing is trail and error on different potential outcomes?

Then it should get much worst and the clutch will start to judder and maybe slip when you release the pedal especially in 1st from a standstill

My first thought was rubber centred clutch breaking up but you’d get driveline lash when accelerating and decelerating - especially in slow stop-start traffic.

There‘s a rubber kind of Cush drive over the pins to absorb the driveline takeup. When it breaks down there’s a between the engagement pins and this causes the lag/lash.

Means the clutch is "knackered” but it should still remain functional - I had this on my old 2.7, did a trackday in South Wales and then drove it back to North East England with no slippage.

Thank you all for your time/advice.

Can anyone recommend a good Porsche Specialist South of London, Surrey/North Hants or a decent mechanic?
