944 30th Anniversary 2012

On reading Paul's article in this months PP I have found out that 2012 is the 30th Anniversary of the 944 being launched in the UK. However nothing seems to be planned in regards to events so I though I would post to find out what people might like to do to celebrate? (If anything) Perhaps we could incorporate something into one of the existing frontrunner events or organise a separate one?

Rather than just the usual tyre kicking exercise what about a 944 trip to Stuttgart and the Porsche Museum (via autobahn) or weekend driving trip in Wales/Scotland/Nurburgring?

What do you think? What would be a fitting event for the occasion?

Seems a shame to just let it pass by...

Scottish highlands was a hit last year for a few of us on Al's stag do. We covered about 700 miles of mostly fantastic, quiet roads and spectacular scenery and never seen a cloud all week!

Some good overnight stops and activities along the way ensured a top time was had by all. Don't ask Al who won the clay pigeon shooting event though. There were 3 of us there and 2 were competent gun handlers whilst one needed shown which end was which at the start of the day.........................

Trust you to bring that up. There are some stunning roads up here and beautiful scenery. I never get bored of it from my train locomotive window!

Yeah I too love the Scottish roads in the highlands, usually fairly quiet unlike Europe's Alpine roads. This picture was taken in the Grampian mountians, proper driving roads and nearly empty.

I like this thinking......

I could do a couple of nights away for a good weekend of driving, and I love Scotland, although the Highlands may be too far for me. How about the 'Evo' triangle in Wales or something in the Lake/Peak district. I don't want to start the North South debate again but it would seem that somewhere further North would allow both the scenery and a chance to meet some of our Scottish cousins

I'd be up for an Evo triangle run (or similar), with a nights stop over or two. The Highlands would be a bit far for me too (the fuel bill would be steep!), but that road looks very tempting Edd.

Ok so Scotland may be a bit far for most, Evo traingle sounds good, although it would need to be more than just the triangle as its not all that long, some great driving roads around there so shouldn't be difficult.


I also drove some roads in the lakes last year and the A592 at 8am through Ullswater was epic, managed to stop for a photo too (I like to mix my passions). A beautiful morning well remembered, its what makes these drives worthwhile...

If we have enough people interested as I think we appear to initially then we might like to start planning what to do now. My only request is that we do this in spring rather than later in the summer as I am pretty much tied up for 3 months with the Olympics as of mid July. We don't have to go crazy but 1 or 2 nights with some planned drives though the day might suffice, if Frenchy knows the lakes then all the better although I would feel a bit guilty he having to organise yet and 944 outing this year...

Edd, Yes correct the others are waters and meres but that is cheating !!i would be willing to look at putting something together if people wanted to come to the lakes, i could tie it in with the Cumbria Classic Show based central Cumbria Nr Penrith usually August..
Loads of other options also.

Not necessarily. Not being a true "classic" anniversary like the 911 one next year, nor an exciting "modern" launch like the Boxster, there's no plan to hold specific events. Porsche won't be overly-interested, the middle-years events were never that well attended compared to the Classics or Modern ones. Being brutally honest I don't get enough numbers at major events to consider something just for the 944s; the smaller, informal meets like tomorrow get more attendees than Register events now. [&o]

I'd happily organise something, but it's got to be what people want to do. We've been trying to get some enthusiasm for Frontrunner going, that's essentially "our" event every year, but I've only had one suggestion from all the hundreds of Register members. There is the argument that we should "build it and they will come", but after last year's Frontrunner I'd struggle to get any venue, sponsors etc. to commit for what could be less than ten cars? The lakes seems the perfect idea to me, get out and do some driving instead of standing around in a car park on a windswept industrial estate or grotty pub!

We're at Silverstone Classic, there is infield parking for the first 300 or so who book on the special Club offer deal. Any 944s there will be able to display but without knowing in advance who's booked early enough it's hard to do anything like a model line-up or something. Any 1982 cars would be very welcome and get pride of place. The national event will be another chance to do whatever we want, all I need to know is what that "want" is; there's plenty of time to plan things. Again, Frontrunner doesn't even have a date, let alone a venue. Suggestions on a postcard please. []

The Lakes sound an excellent idea too - would be great to have a 944 weekend which involves driving and socialising in a beautiful part of the world like that. The trick as ever will be finding a date and possibly budget that suits enough people.

Frontrunner should happen but please not stuck in October and involving an industrial estate in the Midlands like last year. I love 944 events but even for me that carried zero appeal. [&:]
