924 Clutch replacement experience

Russ,I'm not that devious nor competent enough to synchronise so perfectly??

Many congratulations on your completion - brilliant post, pictures & commentary -how do you keep the phone clean whilst doing the work?

Wish we could have kept our 924 Lux but ££££.

The purpose of this procedure is to supply basic but complete information for clutch replacement on a '86 951, with one- or two-piece cross pipe. At the time this was written, I had just recently finished a complete clutch job on my '86 951, which included replacing the throw out bearing, pressure plate, clutch disc, pilot bearing, guide sleeve, and the two needle bearings on the release lever.

Porsche sets the shop time at
23 hours (single-piece cross-pipe) @ $55.00 = $1265.00 ~
16 hours (two-piece cross-pipe) @ $55.00 = $880.00 ~

I know the clutch replacement process on a 944951 is a different beast to doing it on a 924 which is far more mechanical based in operation. Good skills on doing the work yourself though and I'm sure if you have it all documented it would be use to others.

I'm officially back on the road after a few hours to finish the job up this afternoon. The clutch is nice a light with the biting point roughly half way up, the car will go into 1st and reverse with no crunching and there's no rattle at biting point - basically, result!!

There a few bits left to do as I broke a jubilee clamp on one of AAV pipe and the exhaust is rattling small amount when going over speed bumps but both easy fixes.

It was 5 years ago today I picked up a dull white 924 which didn't start properly, wouldn't idle and had gauges which fluctuated wildly along with a host of other problems. Five years on to the day I have a 924 which I would jump in and drive the Scotland if needed, cracking car which just makes me smile!!

Great result, I can feel your satisfaction in a job well done coming across the ether! [;)]
