924 at Silverstone Classic

Many thanks to all 924 owners who turned up to the display, parade lap and those generally just enjoying the event.

The model was treated royally with the first UK import Brian Taylor car, the restored examples from Porsche Cars, the Prostate Cancer 924 and a great concours entry 2.0.
Rickys Carrera GT Register was also represented. Ricky was loving the Carrera GT Le Mans car!

The cars were great, but the people made the event.
 
I had a great weekend with my seldom used 924 I enjoyed the track parade (Its a long time since 4 people were in the car!) the club facilities were spot on, my wife and 7 week old son enjoyed the weekend but she still won't let him in the 924..... I shall keep trying!

 
We had a great weekend at what we think was the best ever Silverstone Classic meeting. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the 924 among many other things. It is good to see that the humble 924 was given a place of honour in the model displays thank you Paul for arranging that and the somewhat disappointing track parade lap, wern't we well behaved. The 924 was given a similar prestigeous location near the main marquee at the Le Mans Classic display and my 1983 924 also had a lot of attention at this years Porsche Parade Europe in Slovenia and Croatia being the only 924 there out of over 200 Porsches. I have owned a 924 for less that 2 years and previously have thought all the usual things about the model, but have found it an enjoyable car to drive and a superb long distance tourer well suited to modern road traffic conditions. Only one gripe though, you can see why Porsche fitted power steering to the later models. To everyone, keep enjoying the 924.

 
Having only just got my 924 back on the road after a winter engine rebuild and MOT'd on the Wednesday prior to Silverstone Classic I was concerned I wouldn’t be arriving at Silverstone in it but it simply did what 924's do - worked! As said above the event was great a the effort and time put in to planning it shone through in the quality of displays. My 924 was a little lost in the infield parking (need to enquire about registers parking!) but the show of transaxle models was great to see.

If your tyres are the correct size (and pressure), your tracking is sorted & both column bearings replaced you'll not wish for PAS on a 924. Have a look through it and listen for bearing noise.

Silverstone Classic was indeed a transaxle fest :)

 
Hi Pete, re, 924 heavy steering, it is only when stationary or at parking speed.

Can you expand on "both column bearings replaced" which bearings are they?

Sorry, missed the question, probably a bit off topic for this thread but I'm sure a mod will split it out.

There are two bearings supporting the 924 column, a needle bearing in the firewall and a ball bearing in the ignition carrier/stalk support.

The former can be cheaply replaced (once the column is out) from a local bearing supplier, the latter requires the carrier to be replaced (though you may be able to press it out and replace they are beetle (early 4 screw mounts) and golf (later 3 screw) parts and easily available.

 
The manual steering on my Guards Red 924S , is generally fine at normal road speeds but quite heavy from rest for parking & reversing-I know this is mainly because of the 2 -2.5 deg negative front camber I've had it set up at for trackday use.

However ,I recently had the need to remove the steering wheel.switch,shroud ,ignition housing Allen bolt & the 2 lower bolts securing the lower bearing housing flange to allow me to lower the column so I could fit a new charging lamp holder in the instrument cluster.

Whilst doing this I found that the lower bolts had clearly been tightened up leaving the switch housing at an angle to the small steel tag it clamps to meaning that the clamp bolt was possibly distorting the column alignement & certainly stressing the switch housing unnecessarily -in fact I had to fit a Helicoil thread replacement to the housing.

When refitting I therefore generally aligned the column with the 2 lower bolts just hand nipped ,tightened up the clamp bolt followed by the lower ones ensuring that every thing was free ,central & not distorted.

There is now less vibration ,the steering wheel shroud fits better & it has eliminated any play I was experiencing in the column.

However it has highlighted that the Turbo 27 dia anti rollbar needs new bushes.As my wife has been using it regularly whilst I sort out her water temperature problem on her 924S,I have however increased the front tyre pressure to 31psi which helps a little.

PS:-note that I don't have a shear bolt as the clamp bolt-it came with the Allen bolt & I refitted this.

 
Having just had my 84 n/a on a full alignment check, which resulted in the toe in being set properly, everything else being spot on or within spec, the difference is remarkable, light steering at all times and having had the front wheels rebalanced also, no vibrations at all at speed. This is with the optional 205/60/15 tyres which you would expect to be heavier. Totally transformed the car.

This was probably the worst car I have had for heavy steering, never really had a problem on any of the others, I always run tyre pressures of 30psi, does make a difference at low speeds.
