911 V 944S2

Performance is one factor, and I guess both cars have their own upgrade path. If you're after a good looking, well built, nicely balanced, reliable, practical car with reasonable running costs then the 944 certainly fits the bill. However, if you're looking for driving enjoyment then there really is no comparison. The 911 offers so much more feel and feedback; the controls are also a bit heavier and it's therefore a more physical experience. The view of the front wings, the glorious soundtrack, the bobbing nose, the focused dashboard, feeling the weight behind you, etc. all hark back to a different time, but just add to the experience. All IMHO of course.

Neil,
people take the rip about air-cooled vw beetles, but they were like the 911 in so many ways which you refer to, and with less power, less weight, less road-holding, less braking power, they were a mini-911.
My second car was a 1974 vw1300, and since then I have had 911sc, 3.2 carrera, 964rs, 996gt2. and driven sportomatic 911 and carrera 3.0. The fact is they share so much concept design.
Not everyone gets on with the quirks such as offset pedals, but to others, "that is" the 911.

ps love the colour of your 44

George,
You have a car back catalogue to be envied. Re beetle - yes, one of my neighbours restored a Beetle and it was interesting to see the similarities such as torsion bar suspension, air ducting, pedal box, etc. Re colour - thanks, not everyone's cup of tea!

I class all that stuff in the category of "you get used to it" (probably [:D]). I loved the mini I used to have years ago but that also had not only offset pedals in a tiny cramped area but a steering wheel at a ludicrous angle like on a go-kart. Never bothered me at the time I just learned to sit a funny angle and got used to it.

I've always liked the look of a 930 but it's performance is far less than my 944T in its current config and this difference will only get greater. Add to that the 930's tendency to swap ends at the slightest hint of lifting off into a bend, I'm better off and safer with the 944T. The 933 is a pretty car but to slow for me and I hate the pedal layout, pedals should be hinged from above, not from the floor like the old beetle.

Agree with all but the pedals, floor mounted are far less fatiguing and required mainly foot movement rather than whole leg movement, most racing cars are floor mounted for this reason.

The 911 design allows pedals to feel more aligned in LHD cars and they do feel to have a better driving position, its why I wanted a 911 since boyhoood but I`ve never quite commited to one as I dislike the offset pedals so much and couldnt bring myself to buy a (cheaper) LHD version

The 944T is quicker than a C2 and a C4S wont catch one and certainly quicker than a 930 (mine was anyway) and the Boxter is no good if you`re over 6 feet tall as you head butt the windscreen all day but I`d like to try a Cayman however I refuse to pay the £1 - £1.50p a mile depreciation in an ordinary Porker.

However..................drive a 933TT.........................wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PS: I came up behind an F50 on a dual carriageway while thrashing the MX5 with the top down yesterday.......trailed it and drove beside it for a while......the noise, my ears.......I cant explain how loud it is and how fantastic it sounds......double, triple wow[8D][8D][8D][8D]

Well this is a good thread I am indeed at this stage of what to do with the 944..

I will keep it for a while longer to be honest but I am looking for a 911 a 996 in fact

I am researching the options of what to do and what to go for.. I like the 993 being Air cooled and all that but really is the 993 worth that much.. I think there is an element of scene tax !

Great cars yes but I wanted a newer car with less issues.. the 996 has a lot of issues and that could end up being a project ! which is not what I want.. so I have looked at a nice 911 SC but I am trying so hard to get away from an early car!!!! But there are some very nice 911 sc's out there it's so difficult to know what to go for

My choice

997 £23k

996 £12k-£16k

996 with duff engine £5k and £6k-£8k to have some one sort a new/rebuilt engine

911sc £15k-24K

my head is swimming of what to do..

I'm not too worried about performance they are all quick cars..

from a pratical point of view I have vans and Estate cars here at 912uk towers so this is not an issue. Plus why would want to take an old washine machine to the tip in the back of a Porsche :) LOL

lol cause for those of us on smaller incomes we can only run one car!

for years i have run 2 and sometimes 3 vehicles but the cost saving of just having one on the road is massive, probably the only reason I can keep spending large amounts to keep my 44 on the road.

For me and my lifestyle only a 944 or 968 fits but even then the choice is large, Lux! 2.5 or 2.7! Turbo 2.5 or 2.7, S2 ! 968 sport or club sport etc

If i behave might be lucky to get odd shot of mates 993, then i get best of both worlds

Good luck in choosing your next porker

ahhh.. but there's a very important car missing from your previous owned vehicles , I wonder what words you'd use for a 944 if you find the 911 as orgasmic, multiple orgasmic perhaps???,,,,,:)

My nieghbour has a minter which I have used sometimes and it is a good car, comfy drives nice, useful as a family bus,but is NOT a 911.

well I have to agree with you on that as we certainly both don't drive fast cars now do we, I'll leave you to work out which is which.

The key words above are; pure / rallied, in my opinion.

Some won't understand but I have to say, at the end of the day - I agree Paul.

Are you sure about that? You would be he only one who I know who thinks so. I like the 911, but its also nice being the underdog, these cars constantly surprise me of what they are capable of and at current prices it they are a classic car bargain.

I'm afraid I took exception to that too Edd which is why I replied as I did which is unlike me but I read Paul's second post to my reply, which I'm sure most can see was done in jest as taking things to a personal level, that I will not let go unchallenged. I too like the 911 and I do fully understand what is meant by George's comment on being pure, unfortunately 911's at times seem to attract the type of people that don't know how to interact with others and I guess this proves my point.

However I shall apologise to members here for my response to Paul regarding which is the faster, re-reading it I was perhaps a little abrupt.

Pete

In 2012 which is faster is largely irrelevant though.

What I can say though is that there are some huge common myths about both cars. My race car for example has vastly more feel and feedback than any modern car I have been in, having been on track with 911s a well setup one also has vastly more grip and handling than many would like to admit to and if anything there better in the wet due to the superb traction.
