And why is the Caterham a 400R? Because it's 400bhp/tonne.

And your RS? 228bhp/tonne....

I know which car I would prefer!!

Des Sorry I must have got the white cars mixed up. What was the torque output on yours. We should have put all of the results together for reference. Mine was tested just after breakfast and it was 278bhp but the test room had cooled down so they tried again and it was 273BHP 258 ft lbs which is exactly the same reading when last serviced Feb 03.
As for the Caterham, fantastic car but would not want to drive it to the Ring.

Again interesting comments .
My personal view is that the differential in lap times may(dependant on circuit )be closer than one would expect
Last summer I took my 993RS to TY CROES on Anglesea ,this is a relatively short circuit with a .couple of good straights and two big b*lls corners.Iwas surprised to be lapping within 1or 2 secs of an R500(both of us with similar ability and running track based tyres)
Interestingly the fast bikes(R1 with slicks)were similar times which leads me to believe that although the Caterham is undoubtley quicker 0-60 when the overall track abilities of the RS are taken into consideration it may be alittle closer
Has any one got a comparison of actual lap times achieved for either types of car on common circuits??
 
Nope, just ill informed guess work again!

LOL, remember that the R500 is harder to drive than the R400 as it has TOO much power, meaning it is difficult to put it all down. It would be very driver and conditions dependent.

Also, cornering on a Superlight is something else - 490kgs compared to 1190kgs.
 
Des is right his car was marginally more powerful than mine although i'm not sure it was as much as 2 BHP. If only I hadn't put that extra floor mat under the pedal. Who knows.

R400 vs 964 RS debate could go on forever. I owned an R400 and it is simply the best track day car ever but try and get your shopping in it.

Just a short note to conclude the RSvCaterham debate!!
On saturday I spent 4hours in a Caterham R400 Superlight (200bhp/490kgs) on some of the best roads N Wales has to offer.

I now conclude that I would probably need a Carrera GT to evan get a look in.The power delivery, handling,and cornering were staggering and we were only running it in!!!

On the track RSvR400 Sorry no contest !!!![8|][8|]
 
Having recently bought a GT3 I am still experiecing the pain of the sale of my 964RS but new family etc.But re the debate I took money off the superlight lot at SPa by running the on slicks(softer compound on the fronts)lower ride height, and more camber on the fronts.This led to an incredibly well balanced set up(could take craner curves at Don, flat).Unfortunately a few track days led to a rekindlling of my race career thus the RS did not get tracked again(besides the ring),but in my eyes it is the most sensational car which I miss

Did make a mention in PP..............got a Cargraphic RSR style twin outlet exhaust with oval ends going on with a G-pipe, no silencer straight through system, will look like yours Lee, from behind.

In reply to John they are two very different types of car but on slicks the RS is special for a road car.Drive a recent F3 to experience true handling without big power to weight,which is not everything to pace.
 
FYI, a good friend of mine came up trumps on the "dot com" boom some years back, and he built (at no expense) an Ultima GTR....Yes...Rapid, Fast, Good looking [8D][8D] ...the whole 9 yds.... However, I offered to give him a race in my "unworthy" Club Sport. He was stunned. [:-]

I won !

Oh, I forgot to mention that the conditions of the race were:- "First one to stay above £30K market value in 2yrs time wins!."

Does this count as a race ? [;)]

LOL, that is a funny story 911 vs Ultima. [:D]

That is why I plan on keeping both the RS and the Ultima [:)]

The Ultima is already being specced up; I have found some carbon tillet seats that at 2kg each all in (no runners) weigh a fraction of the RS Recaros, so it really will make my RS look like a barge full of cupholders. Rosejoints, centre locks, six pot brakes, 18 inch OZ mag wheels. All I need are some of those rivet things and about a year off work [:-]
