8V 944s........?

On my porsche flick through on ebay a saw a car advertised as a 944s but with an 8 valve lump in it. Purely for my own information this is a case of 'i wish it was an s' isn't it?

It' not unheard of to find a Lux badged as an S, or even Turbo, as mine was. Just as a lot of BMWs had "M" badges, Golfs had "GTI" added etc.

When I was young my mother had a yellow Mk1 Fiesta 957cc with a cheap and nasty "TURBO" badge on the back .... [:D]

Is it true that the first 3ltr 16v S2's were badged as S....? Does anyone have one ...?

Donal,

My S2 is a fairly early one, and badged correctly as S2. (I guess it could have been retrospectively badged so, but the literature it came with all shows it badged correclty as well.)

However they are all registered with the DVLA as "S's" - is that what you are thinking of?

Id say you are right there Oli...!

I bet I was thinking of the prototype that Porsche used to test the drive train about 1988... Ive a book by Brian Long at home that I must look up again...
That 944 that Porsche supposedly used was for sale last year on German eBay... It was worse for wear with about 280,000 kms on it. It was silver as far as I can remember...! I was thinking of bidding on it but the work to bring it back to a resonable standard was huge.... I wonder what happened to it or whether it was the genuine article or not.... I'll never know now anyway [:(]

Its not unheard of to see an S with an eight valve replacement engine either. 944S2 and 968 cam chain problems are nothing compared to the 'S' problems from the early-mid nineteen nineties. They were dropping like flies then and there simply werent enough salvage/replacements to go around: a friend of mine once had seven or eight cuctomers cars in his barn waiting in turn or repair. Replacement parts costs from Porsche were terryfying and used engines or heads were like rocking horse sh*te (although bottom ends were ten-a-penny). Ive seen plenty of S's fitted with non-standard replacement engines...
