84 3.2 starting problems

Can anyone help?
The car will not start on the key, it has a brand new high efficiency start motor which has power going to it, turns the pinion but does not seem to engage with the ring gear. The original starter did exactly the same. The engine will start and run without a problem with a tow start.
Any ideas please?
 
Hi,have you checked your battery is fully charged as it pulls a lot of power on startup,also you earth strap located by the torsion bar at the rear of the engine
hope this helps
 
Is the ring on the flywheel ? Is the starting dog on the start motor.
May sound daft questions but it does happen.Especially the ring it could be severely damaged ?
