8.01 BTG - 944 Turbo

Amazing!! And sub 8 minutes would've been quite achievable if it wasn't for those pesky bikers slowing him down! [;)]

It says he's running 14psi - can we speculate what sort of power that would be?

14 psi is slightly less than 1 bar of boost. Presumably he has a well set up engine and boost control setup that can maintan it all the way to the red line. Would be no more than about 285 bhp on an otherwise standard engine.

If those tyres are road legal they must nevertheless be very trick. KWv3 or no KWv3, his readout suggests he is well up into 1.3G plus in some of those corners and that is not something that can be done without downforce and/or extremely unusual tyres. I suppose the G meter may not be well calibrated but his time is extremely quick, so who knows?

tyres are
"Dunlop direzza sport z1 star spec, treadwear 200"
whatever they are.

He knows the track very well & is pretty committed (where he can be) - look at his speed through Schwedenkreuz. Shows you the difference between an experienced racer and an average driver. The balance of the 944 is great for high speed cornering, when you get it set up right & dial out the understeer.

This year when we were over there we watched the RCN - those guys were flying- quite literally as we watched at pflanzgarten. There was a huge speed difference there between the race cars and the road cars on TF. Some of the race cars were getting a lot of air, which takes some courage as you have a pretty sharp (although much faster than it looks) rh straight after.

They look interesting, perhaps halfway between a track-biased semi-slick, and a full 'sport' type road tyre.

Very committed driving. I'm heading over next month and counting down the days. I certainly won't be troubling his 8min, or timing at all for that matter.

Having driven round in similar conditions, the car-control displayed in this video also impressed me greatly.

Yes, very impressive. Even the dry'ish bits were very slippery

Not a place to take too many chances in the wet - specially when it's your own car [:D]

Wow supberb !!
Even went past one of those old water cooled beetle things, pretty quickly.

That is some seriously good driving he's doing there. Very committed and clearly experienced at that track. Car seems to be moving very quickly for 1 bar too. Those tyres are not screeching like you'd be expecting them either.
Highly impressive.

The 2nd clip in the wet is for the birds. They can have a wet 'ring all to themselves as far as I'm concerned. [:D]

Strewth. And it'll say it again - strewth. He's going some.

To be honest, the most impressive aspect of that video for me is not the car - it's the driving.

I'm impressed.

Just think how much quicker he would be in an S2.

(Sorry, couldn't miss the opportunity.) [:)]

Oli.

he might be a good driver, but even he couldn't handle the mighty power of an S2 [;)]

HP (and torque) really counts at the ring for laptimes. I'm as quick through some sections as most cars in my 175hp Honda, but some parts, like the hill up from Bergwerk, the high powered cars just flash past.

Just watched the first vid posted by Ed, no getting away with it, that guy is quick and clearly knows the ring very well. He's not the smoothist of drivers though - lot of sawing at the wheel and squealing of brakes but you're spot on he certainly nails it hard through flugplatz and Sch+. Strikes me that the car doesn't (relatively speaking) have massive amounts of power <300bhp, but the KW suspension and tyre combo works very well to give lots of grip and traction

I thought his driving was very clean given how hard he is pushing the car i.e. he makes it look like he isn't going that fast when he clearly is flying along.

There are some very quick guys round there. I had a shock from a Renault twingo of all things on one of the twisty local roads, honestly couldn't keep up with the guy.

Totally agree Neil. I think this guy looks like he's done thousands of laps around there and that car is deceptively fast.
Some really quick drivers do look quite busy with the wheel as they're constantly 'slip-catching' for want of a better phrase. I was very impressed.

I remember the few times I have been round with a camcorder and the quickest time was 10:06 which was plenty fast enough for me! I think Davyboy (who used to frequent the forum) was in the mid 8's with a Turbo that merely had a chip, Leda suspension and Michelin Cup tyres

Yes his best time was 8:21 IIRC, which was nice.

1.3G is not uncommon to see on these race logic type things (I watch a lot of these clips) but that chap had a really nice style. The circuit looked a lot straighter from his camera. I don't know the names of the bends but there were a couple of bends I know very well (from the xbox[:)][;)]) and he really had them nailed.
