54 Pre A project

912UK

New member
Well now we have a forum for these fine cars we need to use it..

So here is my 54 Pre A as of a pic I took last week in my garage..

Yep needs to be sorted as when i don't get much time on the car It does seam to get used as a very convinent place to put things.

Oh well. Any way once I get a load of work done and out the way for X mass I can get stuck back in.. the car has been stripped and also stripped to bear metal. It is currently in a dust coat of etch primer to keep it from the elilments. So hence it looks worse than it is.. but very good stuff to use. I used this etch primer on my 912 and I painted that car nearly 5 years ago now.

As it was when I bought it in 1999/2000

Purchased for a sum of $7000 from a very nice man in Fresno California, who had it 29 years and 20 of them in his garage. I still speak with him now.

When I say this car is clean I mean it is a resto dream look at the condition of the metal..

So I have set about taking it right back to metal and treating it like did my 912 so I never have to do this again.. Using modern methods it will not rust now unless a seal is broken, but I am keeping an eye on this..

This is a picture under the wheel arches and you can see it;s almost what people look for a rust free 356...The car is the most solid car I have ever seen in resto.. I am VERY lucky..

It's been a few colours over the years!!!!!

Arrrrr the strip down of the car for removal of the paint... My neighbours have seen it all before [:D][:D] On a trolley I made to move it about my garage ( if you want to make one of these they are VERY east to do I can show you see my web site...

The body work naked and just before I acid etched the car and then a dust coat of etch so I can start work on the body..

The etch primer can be wipped off with a cloth and thinners so it makes it very easy to work with and keep the metal sealed from the damp air..

In the back ground you can see my 65 912 project near to finishing...

So once that is done I can concentrate on my 54 car..

edited to say.[:-]
Doh, just seen in your last picture...its green[8D]

Wow. Fantastic find - but what a difference from the "before" picture to the stripped down!
Interesting patch on the front [:D]
What colour are you going for? And is it back to original or <whisper> outlaw....?

James , there are number of pictures about web sites..

lets just say the car had a fair bit of filler... and it was not needed.. so I have no idea why it was on there. But I can say it protected the metal !!!!!!

I had to use a hot air gun and a scraper to get it off.. it came off very easy...

Helen here is the orginal colour...

Patch on the front..

Yep when i bought it as per the top photo I got it from the shippers with a dent in the front nose I was MAD!! but when i started to look at the car I noticed it had had some damage in the past and I noticed a few tel tel signs so I have started to fetal the front nose back to shape it is working well and when it costs $3000 for a new nose clip ....... yep I kinda need to fix the one I have.. But it is an easy fix so far it's just a case of slowly moving the metal abit at a time with out stretching the metal.. any way I am getting Terry a 356 old boy to go over what I have done to feltal the last bit before I start to paint.. The hole where what some one did years ago to pull the dent out NOT the best way to do it.. but hey ho..

BTW if you go to just cut the front clip off the distortion on a 356 nose is huge and one to avoid..if you can hence I am working slowly with it still in place..

Oh and what am I going to do to it... Mark Fred will be happy I am restoring it back to orginal.... but with a twist...[;)]

I have a spare engine lid and I will have a GT lid for when I feel like having a GT lid on the boot and some bumpers with GT strips and a set with normal deco strips so. I will have a car I can change with a set of spanners as and when I am in the mood..
