4 Versus 6 – Just my opinion

My report was an honest appraisal between two different cars.

If you choose not to take my report seriously that's your prerogative, but its comments like yours that may well put other contributors making there own personal views known on this forum

Everyone has certain things they're very sensitive to, and it varies person to person. On the steering I didn't think there was much difference between my 981 CGTS and a 981 GT4, the GT4 just felt a little heavier. Neither was better or worse for me, just different.

However when it comes to turbos I hate the feel of them under my right foot. It's just too rubbery a response and I can sense even the slightest amount of lag. For that reason I would always chose a NASP engine if I could.

I think Mr Demon feels about steering feel how I feel about turbos.

I just thought the line was a shocker to read and as I am a honest in my feed back stated as such.

A good review Peter, seemed fair and well balanced. Just a few points having read some of the replies.

Interesting opinions on EPS. I think it pays to remember that the early EPS systems were just that, early attempts. The newer generations are getting better and better and more difficult to tell apart from older hydraulic PS as the hardware and software is refined.

I have been following the aftermarket exhaust offerings for the 718, to see if anyone offers "the solution". As far as i can tell nearly all the current aftermarket and Porsche offerings all offer what amounts to a rework of the original unequal length design. No one as yet has offered anything significantly different. No surprise then that they all seem to sound somewhat similar ! The size of the tubing back box and valving being the major differences. I am guessing this is because any change in design(to say equal length headers !) will mean a fundamental change to the inlet / turbo installation and resultant increased cost ?

I know i have said this before but I keep reading owners reports that mention such words as doesn't offend, okay and not that bad when referring to the engine sound. I am a long time Porsche fan and i can really see myself buying a 718. However the thought of handing over 50k + and having to use such adjectives to describe the engine simply put me off the idea altogether. Having spent that amount of money I would want to be in rapture with the sound , not frankly disappointed by it.

Fair comment Laurence.

Regarding the 718 sound, I am still considering the FVD Brombacher Sport Muffler, Export Version, with exhaust valve. A bit of a mouthful! A photo of the cat-back system is attached. You will notice that this exhaust retains the unequal length headers, it replaces the standard PSE and is only available for PDK gearbox 718's. I've been told by FVD that the Export Version with the valve open is quite loud, >100db, too loud in fact for Germany's streets. The current sound of the PSE is slightly deeper and throatier than the standard exhaust, but still requires some work on the raspy nature of the sound at certain revs. Regarding the sound, I'm in the "you get used to it" camp. At higher revs it honestly sounds fine.

Intersting to read the car mag testers reports on the new 718 GTS. Even Andrew Frankel stated that the PSE on the 718 GTS he recently tested, seemed "less farty" than on the "S" model. Maybe Porsche are refining this sound, and like the EPS development, will eventually achieve an acceptable result.

Brian,

Interesting to hear that you're still considering the FVD system - I recall you mentioning it some time ago and me pointing out that it's sound was rather a (high cost?) leap in the dark. With your interest in using the car for trackdays you'll need to be sure that the system also meets the sound requirements of the various circuits (another leap in the dark..!).

Noise...

I am restricted to 105db static tracks and have trouble at Goodwood where I exceed their 101db drive by limit, so I can't go there anymore. I have tried turndown tips to no avail and Decibel Devils, Cherry Bombs and the like either won't fit or are too heavy.

So I am investigating fitting a custom silencer box to occupy the space between the two rear boxes and extended tips (there is not too much "volume" there for a really efficient system). Luckily I live close to both Cargraphics and DesignTek suppliers so hopefully I can get the noise down with a properly engineered solution without going to a big external system.

Jeff,

It's the noise aspect that I'm currently in discussion with FVD about. I've already requested a decibel reading at 5000rpm with the valve open from FVD. They have responded to the effect that the manufacturer of the exhaust M&M, have no such figures available, only stating that the current export version exhaust is too loud at over 100db at 5000rpm. FVD tell me that M&M are currently working on a modified quieter version, but as yet I have no further details. I'll be following this matter up over the next few weeks.

At each of the track days I attended last year, a static noise test was carried out prior to be allowed on the track at the start of the day. It is interesting to have the experiences of other "noisy" cars at track days. The main thing I am worried about is spending £3k on this exhaust, and being disallowed track time after paying entry fees and insurance. Track days are an important part of my Porsche ownership experience.

Brian,

I saw recently a post on a forum (can't recall which one) but the guy dealt directly with M&M and spoke with ?Anke? who proposed a system that met his needs.

Can't vouch for the result but I'd cut out the middle man and call M&M directly.

This might be more fun though

This months edition of GT Porsche magazine have just run an article comparing the 718 GTS against the 981 GTS.

There is still a strong bias towards the 981 i.e. 6 cylinders and sound.

.... and long will the debate continue [;)]
