Does anyone know what colour the fan housing should be for a 1962 356 Super 90 engine?

Also what is the correct gloss level of the Black paint on the engine tinware?

If I recall correctly, in the 50's the shrouds were black - then switched to off white - HOWEVER Supers, including Super 90, had a silver grey finish - Carreras remained black.

Engine tinware was, I believe, in the 60's matt / satin finish as oposed to gloss.

ps: any chance of a reply to my emails? [;)]

I've been having the same conversation about the colour of my fan housing - mine is white, not the grey that appears in the reference books! No evidence of repainting.

It appears that all three (grey, black, and silver) are "correct" but there was more black as you get later and silver was not on early cars as best as I can find out. The grey is rarer, but not uncommon.

It seems that, as usual, it depended on the mood of the factory!

Super 90's were grey the rest were black and matt as pointed out ( unless you do a USA restoration and they are gloss gloss gloss black eg over done !! ) interesting about the white I can't say I have seen any and I have put my head in a huge number of 356 engine bays over the world..

Philip interesting comment about supers mine is a super 1300 but I think mine is black even for 1954.

I think from memory Dawane spencer did some odd stuff and painted all his engines with a grey fan housing as he felt all his engines were Super !! [:D][:D]

just read about the tin wear question I happen to think it was a satin finish. rather than matt. Don't ask most of the americans ( sorry just being honest ) as they do tend to make them very gloss looking " BLING BLING " type.. ask on the 356 forum in Holland ..but your fan housing 100% Grey finish..

The Stoddard catalogue has the following to say about fan shrouds.

"As far as we know all 356 Normal and 912 engines had black fan shrouds. Early super and S90 engines has silver fan shrouds although some very early S90s had a very light grey, almost white fan shroud. Late Super, S90 and 356C/SC engines had grey fan shrouds. None of this information however is written in stone and Porsche has no records of which colours were used for which fan shrouds."

According to The Maestro (Page 241 of The A`s B`s and C`s)

Normal - Black
Super - Silver
Super 90 - White
356 `C` - Grey / Silver (I would call it Grey / Blue -mike)
356 SC - Beige / Off White
912 - Black

I have to say that, I do not think that I have ever seen a White Fan Housing - There are many small differences between European Cars and USA Cars - maybe this is another one
