356 C Cabriolet

I'm looking into the possibility of a 356, preferably a cabriolet, mainly for the looks and the joy of owning a classic, but I suppose in addition there's also the thought that my savings may also be better deployed there rather than earning nothing with the current poor rates! I'd be most grateful for any advice that anyone would care to offer (such as don't do it!)

The following advert has recently appeared on a well-known motoring website http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1970999.htm - the car is for sale at 75,000 so is that about the market rate and is the C model as desirable as the earlier models?

That's pretty top money "" 356Cs generally are not quite as sought after as earlier models. Currently there are two RHD 356B Cabriolets on www.pistonheads.com "" one from Nick Whale, one private "" both at around £20,000 less than the one you mention.
 
Had a rhd cab for several years.

However, wouldn't necessarily recommend the Cabriolet - personally prefer the Coupe, Roadster or Speedster. Cab roof never folded very well and always looked like a pram.

Also agree that 'C's aren't the most desirable and lhd will offer wider choice and appeal.

If you have never owned a 356 before my advice for what's its worth is:-

- Don't be put off by what other people say. Some like the older models (A) and others have the (C) as lovers. Some like hard tops - and other like them topless - Lets face it, we don't all like skinny slim girls - some like them with a bit more volume and shape.[;)] Get to know the models go to meetings and look at the different models - a good starter book is from the Ownership series title 'Buying Driving and Enjoying the Porsche 356' by James E Schrager. This will give you a good idea what you are looking at and some useful information to boot. In so far as the mechanics went the engines general got more horses as the models developed. A major plus for the C model was Disc brakes all round - all previous models having been fitted with drum brakes.

One thing I would recommend is always buy on condition - any of the 356 models are very exspensive to restore - far in excess of the value of the models in most cases.

If you find something you like the look of a PPI is not an option - it is essential![8|]

Enjoy your serach - its the first part of ownership - buy the model you want in the correct condition and you will have a friend for life[;)]
