30th anniversay, After the event

Surely I can't be the first to post, but then again the last thing those of you who had to travel miles and miles to get to Reading probably wanted to do when you got home was to sit at the PC. Well "they dun us proud" If a lot of the 911 snobs don't recognnise the 924 as a Porsche, Porsche cars certainly do. Thanks again to everyone who gave up their time to make the event run smoothly.
I would like to apollogise to the 924s owner on the M4 who may have thought I was messing about, going like the wind one minute then 70 mph the next. I think the damp must have got to the connectors one the dme unit, and I developed a terrible misfire. Coupled with a loud clatter I thought I had shed the cambelt again as I was pressing on a bit. The clatter turned out to be the radiator cap, which, in my haste to prepare the car, I had left loose under the bonnet. The misfire disappeared as quickly as it appeared and I arrived home without further mishap.

A confession. I wasn't there.
Despite promising to bring 2 cars I found myself, last week, with a 924 Lux stuck in the garage waiting for brake parts (MOT time) and my 931 (924 Turbo) with a busted gearbox.
As the event happened I was driving (in my Peugeot) down to the south coast to collect a replacement gearbox.
I was really looking forward to it.

Ive done a gearbox on a turbo, Geoff. You will need a 10 mm hexagon bit for the top two flange bolts, but you can't use a head bolt type tool because it is too long. I used a 12mm bit from my set, reversed to give a 10 mm end in a 12mm socket which is stronger than the suplied 10 mm socket obviously. Also you will need an 8mm splined key for the driveshaft, disconnect both ends, dont muck about, and clean out the recesses ad-infinitum until you obtain the absolute best fit for the splined bit or it will round off on you. Get one of those headband torches to enable you to see the top gear-box bolts wih two free hands. Wedge the gearbox over to one side to undo the lever coupling, withdraw it from inside the cabin and access the bolt. Move the box over to the left and do the same for the right hand bolt. The rest is straight forward. Mind you have got a box with a 25mm input shaft, the m471 dog-leg discbrake option for the 924 used a box with a 20mm shaft. Believe it or not, on re-assembly, the coupling for the lever seems to find it's own centre and is quite easy to get back onto the gearshift shaft. Best of luck. Any problems email me direct ( in the 'post) and I will send you my home phone number so we can chat.

It was a totally awesome day wasn't it!!

Well worth my 450 mile roun trip from Cornwall.

(Wonder how much the mechanics have to pay Porsche to be allowed to work in that workshop???)

:)

Very many thanks to all involved

Thanks John, helpful as usual BUT. I have a special tool kit, it is a new sewing machine (thats my trade) and my mechanic wants one for a Christmas present for his wife. Saves doing what you don't do best or using money.[;)]

Great day out Paul, thanks very much for organising it. Please pass on my thanks to Geoff Turral and his staff at Reading for looking after us so well.
