Celebrate 30 years of the 944 at Arley Hall 9th September 2012 with Region 5 (North West)

At the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1981 Porsche debuted the Porsche 944. The 944 had a body style based on the Porsche 924 Carrera GT, but with a Porsche designed 2.5L engine. There was a lot of excitement about the new car and it was available in the UK in 1982. While the performance was not up-to-par with the Turbo Charged Porsche 924 Carrera GT, it was still very good for the time.

When the Porsche 944 was first available the 0-60 MPH time for the car was 8.3 seconds. While by today's standards that seems pretty slow, in 1983 (or 1982 depending on when the car was bought) the car was competing with cars like the Mazda RX-7 that had a 0-60 MPH time of around 9 seconds

With just over a week to go we still need more cars for the 944 30th Anniversary display. If you can come along please contact Peter Bradshaw (e-m:bradshawpeter@mail.com; tel: 07766 490809) letting him know the model and year of 944, and any other interesting details.

Porsches at Arley Hall is the principal annual event of the North West Region (R5) of the Porsche Club GB. All Porsche owners are welcome, as are other visitors to the Hall.

Directions Arley Hall is less than a mile from the village of Arley, in Cheshire, approximately mid-way between Knutsford and Warrington. It is most easily reached from either Jcn 19 of the M6 or Jcn 9 of the M56 (M6 Jcn 20), and both approaches are signposted

Address Arley Hall & Gardens Northwich Cheshire, CW9 6NA

A small aside: the 8.3 seconds 0-60/62 times were extremely conservative. Contemporary motoring magazines tested production cars, two up with half a tank of fuel, at 7.2 seconds to 60mph! The 2.7l 944 actually managed 7 seconds dead.

Other figures correlated from Autocar & Motor tests:

924 ~ 9.7
924S ~ 7.4
931-S1 ~ 6.8
931-S2 ~ 7.7
937 ~ 5.4
944-1 ~ 7.2
944-2 ~ 7.9
944-2.7 ~ 7.0
944S ~ 7.5
951-220 ~ 6.0
951-250 ~ 5.3
944S2 ~ 6.0
968CS ~ 6.1
