2.9/2009/987.2: another saga starts!

Ran the car up this morning, all dry. Level between min/max BUT I had 2 litres of cooant over so suspected an air lock somewhere.

Had a good 30 mile run this morning, high/low revs and 3 miles from home the 'Check Coolant' warning appeared and the temp gauge raced to 180 in 2 seconds.

Dropped 2 litres of coolant into the top up in the boot and restarted, all ok on the dash. Level right on MAX
Good look under the car at home and everywhere drip-free, good start and I think the car has burped itself.

Time will tell.

Sounds like a result Graham, and for your sake I really hope that it's not yet another false dawn.

If you don't have a vacuum device for evacuating the coolant system I think it's always tricky getting all the air out, but it sounds as though you've now achieved it.

Jeff

Another good run in the car today on country roads, so revs up and down etc and a good shaking too, pot-hole dodging is my new found driving skill..

Prob about 70 miles, and back about 1 hour ago.
All bone dry underneath, all splash shields drip-free. Will check the coolant level tomorrow when cooled down, but suspect it will be below Min.
It must have found it's operating level by now and be air-pocket free?

Just might have a coolant-tight 987.2
NO cold start smoke for 9 consecutive starts, last 6 have been drive way movements.

Car ran a dream today, now on Shell 99 octane.
Scottish tour booked, possibly about 2000 miles, really looking forward to the moody skies, moody hotels, porridge in the morning and some fine specialist brews in the evenings.
Don't care if it is wet, hope the midges have all disappeared.

Just to put a lid on this lot, the car has been given some good runs and a few high revving runs etc and the mornings after?
Dry.
no under body drips, and the coolant level, cold is between max and min and stable.

must be ok now.
Scotland tour all booked, really looking forward to it.
Thanks to all for your help and support, it certainly all helps.
Graham.

That’s excellent news Graham - great to hear.

Here’s to a trouble-free trip north of the border. Slainte!

It's funny I had to have my cross pipes changed for the same reason. I noticed even after I filled the car up with coolant to the max level first thing in the morning, the following day it would be below minimum. No warnings though so all I can assume is that it just is meant to be that way. I have the intermittent very smoky start. I had the oil breather changed under extended warranty, Still intermittent very smoky start. OPC Cambridge then reset the adaptations. Still intermittent very smoky start. It's like a James Bond smoke screen. Only if a button could be fitted to do it on order, I'd feel like Sean Connery:) Myself and the wife love the Highlands too, Glen Coe, Glen Lyon, Perthshire and Aberfeldy. Sometimes we stop of in Perth and love the idea of moving there one day. Unfortunately working in the City of London limits the work we can get in the Highlands...

So, I'm not alone in having a James Bond car!
I have been keeping a close eye on the coolant level and so pleased to say since doing the job the level is now holding Max, checked it twice a week a day after a run, run being 14 miles to 140.
dry underneeth, no puddles, no dash messages.

even only slightly smokes randomly on numerous starts, and I meant minimal smoke, no Bond stuff.
Scotland soon, really looking forward to the run and driving the car in wide open space.

Might even wash it and wax the nose before setting off!
Apart from the JB smoke risk, this car is actually working well with nothing 'pending'.
Should be at about 64,000 miles when we get back, about 6k / year.
Amazingly, the wife said the Boxster seats were the most comfortable for long journeys, amazing.
