just an update on my earlier post,i have tried some hydraulic tappet quitener an it has had a small improvement but the noise is still there hot and cold. Been reading up on the problem and there has been a few suggestions that it could be the oil pressure relief valve that is sticking or is stuck, does anyone know how to remove this and clean it and is a difficult job to do_Or should i just try an engine flush and another oil change first using a thicker oil maybe a 15/50 semi iam using a 10/40semi at the moment, just worried iam doing long term damage to the engine even though it idles and drives fine with plenty of power????

Can't help with the oil pressure relief valve. Someone else will be able to tho' I am sure. (I think they are pretty easy to get at and clean out, but am not sure.)

Are you sure it's tappets tho'? The injectors can be a bit ticky and it's a very similar noise.

A good flush (with a flushing oil) is a great way forwards, and thicker oil may not be a bad idea. You are not likely to do any damage with ticking tappets, the only problem is acoustic (as in - it sounds awful!)

There is a non return valve buried in the head that is a PITA to renew as it means head off.

If this fails/sticks open then the head drains down when sitting for a while. This means the tappets will be noisy for a few seconds until they pump up but if they are all noisy it suggests investigation is required.

As Oli suggests, the injectors are noisy and you will clearly hear them ticking.

You shouldn't hear anything from the injectors in the cockpit. TBH I think it sounds like the non return valve. As suggested it is a lot of work. If it goes away fairly quickly then you have good oil feed as the tappets become hydraulic. Unless it becomes worse I would live with. Just allow the car to warm up in it's own time, which is good practice anyway.

You wont hear the injectors in the cockpit. If its in the cockpit you can hear the tappets all the time and its all of them then its low oil pressure to the head. The NRV will allow oil to drain dowm when its standing but the injectors will pump up when the engines running.

Whats your oil pressure like when cold? Could be a sticky oil pump PRV?

If you need to you can remove the OPRV working underneath the drivers side wheel and its fairly easy to get out. I had to do mine on an S2 I owned, it was making a humming noise, it didn't appear to affect the tappets. Its pretty easy to strip and clean, I think I ended up stretching the spring a little so it lifted a slightly higher pressure. They are an expensive item to buy new if you need one.

On the subject of noisy tappets, they can get stuck, my lux has been off the road for a while and I start it from time to time to keep everything loose and lubed, the tappets had been getting progressively noisier. I let the engine warm up and then revved the nuts off it and hey presto everythings quietened down again and its back to normal. Might be worth a try so long as you are confident you have decent oil pressure.

Before going too far with stripping the top of the engine check the oil pick up pipe in the sump as if its cracked it can starve the top of the engine of oil leading to the tappety sound. I started at the top on my S2 and worked down until the cracked pick up was found. It'll be a lot cheaper to check that before starting on stripping the top of the engine.
