1st Year of ownership of a higher mileage 991.2 Targa 4 GTS

Owning a higher mileage 991.2 Targa 4 GTS has been quite an adventure over the past year, I've clocked 4,000 miles, bringing the total to nearly 72,000 miles now.

Purchased from an independent specialist, the car came with a full service history and an extended warranty, which turned out to be a lifesaver.

I hope my experience and the list of faults will be helpful to others and provide some insight into what it's like to own an aging 991.2:

1. Right Turbo oil leak – Oil feed banjo bolt and seal replaced.

2. Right rear spring cracked – 2x new rear springs and 1x level sensor and 4-wheel alignment.

3. A/C loss – 2x condensers replaced

4. Rear spoiler failure (intermittent) – Readapted.

5. A/C loss of pressure – Dye added and O-rings on underside pipes replaced.

6. Intermittent coolant fault on dash (no loss or overheating) – Fault codes read, radiator flaps/vacuum system – Water pump was failing and caused blocked vacuum valve block. New pump, flush, and valve block.

7. Rear knocking at low speed under 20mph – Targa cross brace was hitting the chassis due to a foam pad dropped out.

8. A/C loss again – Pipe block at front of bulkhead replaced.

9. Coil pack cracked - Replaced during service.

Overall, it was not a great first year, but I’m hoping I’ve got a bulk of common issues out of the way now and looking forward to using it more this year.

I’m glad and would recommend having a Extended Warranty on any used Porsche, and have extended this for another year, be it with another supplier now. Also credit to the independent specialist for getting through the faults with no cost to myself.

I made it to a couple of meets and Brooklands over the last year, so hopefully I'll have the car more on the road and available now.

Nice car, thanks for sharing. I have a 991.2 C4S. Had same as your No.6. Pump, valve block and vacuum lines replaced under warranty. Mine's at 40,000 miles. Plan on renewing the warranty for as long as possible!
