1988 944 Lux Cat D

I have a 1988 Porsche 944 Lux 2.5 with 126k on the clock which is a repaired cat D and as far as I can tell an import. The car has been salvaged and repaired but I am not sure what the extent of the damage was as nothing stands out on the vehicle.

I was just wondering what the best way of selling would be, to part it out, or sell as a whole?

The cars body is actually in fantastic condition, completely rust free and straight and only has a few minor stone chips. Cream interior is also in good condition and besides a small tear in the drivers seat the leathers really well kept and so are the carpets. The 15" teledials are literally immaculate, not a single scuff or graze on them at all.

The engine is fine and the car drives really well, gearbox is also ok as is the clutch.



So what would be ideal way of making the most out of it, ebay auction, parts? And realistically what can I expect.

I suspect breaking it is the way to make the most money but not many folk on here wouldn't think much of you for breaking a perfectly usable 944. Fortunately in reality it is too much hastle for the average private individual on his drive or maybe we would have no 944's left ! I assume that doesnt bother you though or you wouldnt ask about potentially proifiting from breaking a good car on a 944 enthusiast forum [&:]

Personally I woudn't dream of breaking a perfectly good 944 or buying parts from someone I knew had done it. I suspect I may be in a minority on the last bit [;)]

As for the value if sold on E Bay or P.H , possibly you need to say does it have much service history and any recent belts change , clutch change etc etc as this is everything as inportant as actual running / visual appearance in valuing a 944. I nearly forgot , the colour you dont mention that either and for me a White one might be worth 500 pounds less than one of the really stunning and often rare colours especially if the paint is in top condition. Colour would be a major consideration for me in buying my next Porker.

Oh sorry I wasn't here to upset anyone by saying I was going to definitely break it hah, I was just hoping you guys would have more of an idea of the best way to sell, be it parts or as a whole.
The cars marine blue (I think thats the correct name) and its actually a very nice colour. Its a very useable car and ive been driving it daily lately so it would be a shame to see it in parts but realistically i cant keep it anymore as I lack a garage and it isnt terribly practical!

The SH was either lost by a PO or something along those lines, it does have a few recent MOTs and has a 12 month ticket on and is taxed too.

Really the only thing letting it down is the history and the cat D mark against it, as its a lovely car.
 
Azurite Blue perhaps ? , Diamond blue or Dove Blue. I havn't heard of the Marine blue for a 944 but a guru will be along shorltly and tell me I am wrong [:)]
 
Not Maritime. Its a very late colour, with only six or so UK coupes supplied. It was also an unpopular colour then. I bought a nearly new 968 CS in Maritime Blue and I paid less because no one wanted it and the OPC were worried that it was becoming a landmark!

How things change; eh?
 
Marine Blue L35V, introduced for the 1988 model year, along with Linen trim and smooth (no script) door handles.
 
Cat D is nothing to worry about really as it may have just been keyed, for the value of the car i would not bother it is not really a 30k car after all, my Turbo S was an insurance right off ! no damage whatsoever, the car had been serviced and they had not tightened a clip on a water hose it blew off and cooked the engine, it was now subject to a claim from the people that serviced the car (An OPC) a brand new ebgine was deemed too expensive by the insurance co so the car was written off.
A very well known breaker (not DV) bought the car had the engine rebuilt and used it himself for a while before selling on.
I have just bought a Cat D Zafira for the other half off a mate who has a bodyshop, it needed a front bumper, radiator, and some paint for scratches, at least £1500 cheaper than a forecourt, low miles and drives spot on, when we come to sell it it will not be worth much anyway.
 
Yeah I figured a Cat D isn't too bad really. I THINK it means it was viable to fix but the repairs would almost equal the value of the car so easier to write it off. I need to find out exactly why but it could have been anything. I certainly cant find any evidence of it anyway :s
 
If the car was straight and drove well with no signs of damage Cat D would not bother me, Cat D is not a write off !
Cat A and B are for the crusher only.
 
Cat D is no real problem - ddoesn't even need an engineers report , basicly expensive (relative!) cosmetic damage.
 
Yeah its straight and drives lovely, dealers wont touch it on a part ex as its cat d though. (Not that it matters like)
 
Why would you want to sell such a lovely car? [:(]

I guess the Cat D thing may be a bummer and weigh on your mind however that's just at somepoint an insurer decided it was uneconomical to repair which could mean anything and nothing structural or whatever that could be potentially dangerous. But I think the biggest negative is no service history - personally I wouldn't buy a 944 without a fairly long and extensive one due to past disasters but that's just me. Maybe keep it for a while and build up some servicing history, it could also worry potential buyers that you're selling it on so quick (if it was a fairly recent purchase) when they see the V5
