Hello,
I just moved to San Diego and learned that my neighbor was considering selling his 1980 911SC. The car is in excellent condition, completely rust-free, and comes with a lot of paperwork, including a full rebuild done less than 100,000 miles ago. Supposedly, it only needed an alternator. However, since it had been sitting for over five years, I expected it would need more work.
I replaced the spark plugs, drained the old fuel and filled it with fresh gas, changed the oil (being careful not to overfill), and installed the new alternator. Today, I finally got the car started.
Here’s the issue: it’s smoking as if it’s been treated with Seafoam. The throttle response is delayed and poor, it wants to stall when I try to accelerate, and barely revs. It bucks and misfires a lot when I attempt to drive down the street.
I’m guessing I’ll need to go through the entire ignition system: wires, CDI, cap and rotor, coil. What else should I consider addressing?
