1978 SC Various

Dear all,
I'm new to PCGB & have recently got my hands on a 964 C4. Spankin motor lots of fun, suits you sir. However my brother has a 78 SC and is having a few problems.

1. No heat in the cabin. We have noticed that at least one of the exchangers have localised corrosion that penetrates thru the outer skin. Could this be a cause?

2. Sunroof is leaing because a pershed seal. Is this a DIY job? Any tips?

3. The car is now due a service. Any recommendations in the South Manchester area?

Cheers

Steve

Hi Steve ......welcome......911s don't have great heating systems , however they can keep you toasty warm and defrost the screen if maintained properly. To have good heat to the cabin the heat exchangers need to be leak free after that the next problem is the 'heater -flapper' valves they sit to the left and right of the rear firewall underneath the car right in front of the left and right cockpit tunnels and are contolled by cables running from a box situated between the front seats. With the circular dial set to 'OFF' (flapper valves open and letting all the hot heat exchanger air escape to the outside) no heat should pass to the cabin and with it on 'DEF' (flapper valves closed and letting heat through to the cabin) you should get all the heat the engine can deliver, my bet is that the heater flapper valves are stuck, they are notorious for getting clogged up as they live in a cruel enviroment of extremes. Check the circular dial for electrical function and if it's working get under there and watch the valves work or not as the case maybe. If the valves are working then the HEs must be really knackered or the hoses from them are disconnected.
The sunroof is a bit of a pain to fix as the headliner needs to be removed , buy yourself the Bentley 911 manual if you are attempting DIY repairs, it's the best one. Hopefully someone will chip in with a Manchester Independent to look at your car.

Cheers Bones,
Got a better look at the heat exchangers & they are completely shot so we are going to replace them. Any tips for getting our hands on some stainless steel replacements.

As for the sunroof seal my brother has found someone to do the seal & fit the replacement exchangers.

A favourite option for these cars if you want a long lasting system that will release about 15bhp more is to fit an SSI conversion for about £1500.00. If that is beyond budget then ring around sll the parts suppliers for prices on stainless or mid steel replacements. Ask who the manufacturer is and if you don't get a sensible answer shop elsewhere. Post back when you have all the info.

Just received an email from my brother & he was quoted £1800 for a stainless system, which is way over budget. However have spotted a couple of exchangers on ebay, starting bid £100. I'll keep you posted.

I think the ones on E-bay are for a 3.2. Check that they will fit onto a SC as I think I read somewhere that they are different. I got a good deal on a pre-silencer from Specialist cars of Malton nice bit of kit with gaskets thrown in a delivered next day.

An update of where we are up to.
The sunroof seal was replaced by a well known service center but it is still leaking. Any thoughts welcome.
The stainless heat exchangers are on order (£500) & are due in a couple of weeks.

Take the car back and insist it is fixed, that's what you payed for and who are these people? You must be going for a replacement of the stock system then, if you are having the HEs fitted at the same place that 'fixed' the sunroof seal I'd have the the roof repair done first to your satisfaction and then only if it's OK have the other work done.
