‘99 996 Emergency Front & Rear Bonnet Release Cable Location

After a thread title like that, there isn’t much left to add. I have a flat battery and a broken door lock at the same time.

The car has been at a specialist for months and they allowed the battery to go flat and then left it like that. It only had a surface charge when I collected it and (despite “it’ll be fine” assurances) the manual door lock appears to be broken too leaving me completely locked out. And the locking wheel nut is in with the tools too!

I would be grateful if anyone could advise of tge locations for the emergency cables on a RHD car, and any hand breaking-in tips. I have small pump bags but I’m unsure whether the car deadlocks and if the door handles can be pulled, etc….

Hi Simon
The boot emergency release cable is usually located under the front nearside wheel arch liner, this can be hard to get to with the wheel in place, The engine compartment release cable should be located under the nearside tail light between the bumper and the light a bit of fishing and you should be able to locate it this will be your better option.

With the engine lid open you should be able to access the power terminal (996.1 have them not 100% on dot2) this can get some voltage to the battery so you can charge it. Hopefully this will wake up and use the fob to open.

Once sorted repair the door lock which is a common problem and I would advise any 996 owners reading this to try unlock your car occasionally with the key instead of the fob just to make sure your lock is working correctly.

Thanks Andy. I believe that it is behind the offside / driver’s side wheel arch liner…. I am just going to have to jack the damned thing up. Opening it might be a lot harder.

Andy is correct. If you have mechanical release levers (which you should have on a '99 model), the cable is on the nearside. If you have electric release buttons, it is on the offside. It should be located around the back of the headlight tray, and you have to peel up the edge of the front section of the arch liner.
