£140 gamble 944 project.....

Safe buy at £140... you'd get that back just selling a few bits, but good on you for restoring it instead! Looking forward to see lots of pics of it steadily going back together!
 
just did a dvla check on the car.....Registration Date: 06/04/1983.....so its a pretty early example....coollllll
 
Don't break it. get it on the road looks like a good solid car just neading a few bits of trim etc and a set of wheels. Where in the country are you? If your near me I would gladly give you a hand if you get stuck with anything.I am sure where ever you are in the land you will find one of us 944 boys near by who will help.In the mean time talk to alisdair (suzleruk) or elliot if you need any bits.
 
The 1983 2.5 8 valves are by far the most sort after model!!!!!, not that I am in any way biased you understand :), actually the early models do have a few things going for them IMHO, no power steering/ABS etc, purer driving experience and all that, obviously there are ascociated downsides i.e bl*ody hard to turn the wheel at low speeds and if a dog runs out you will hit it but apart from that great
 
i was 16 when the 944 first came out and it was my dream car lol i had to settle for a £250 capri when i was 17 but always wanted a 944 but kids/house took priority in the early years ...now i'm 45 no mortgage kids all grown up...time for my dream car [:-]
 
Looks well worth what you paid, probably worth 6 times that in bits, but do not do that let it roll and enjoy it, bits always for sale on here.

Is it possible to fit 18 inch ford 4 stud wheels ? If so what adapters would I need as I've spotted some very nice local wheels going cheap
 
No do not fit Ford wheels, keep it Porsche, been down the Ford route with cars and some of the very cars i owned are now bringing daft money, i had an RS 2000 in black, last year it was at 15k plus asking price my 944 Turbos are ten times the car. Mind you i would still have one in my "lottery garage" As regards fitting Ford wheels it would be a serious bugger about if at all possible. ?
 
As Frenchy says.... If Porsche thought 4 studs were enough they would have fitted them . Get some Cookie Cutters black centres and polished rims, classic and perfect for the car, would have them on my late car if they would fit.
 
i've had an idea thrown at me tonight and i'm mulling it over...........what about an oval dash conversion ? bearing in mind the car owes me virtualy nothing
 
Different dash board. Different centre console. Different instruments. Different gearbox. Different wiring loom. Different battery location. Different door cards. Different ignition lock. Different steering column mountings. Different heater. Different fan. Its a MASSIVE job and it wasnt worth it when the cars were worth good money (15+ years ago). Simon
 
You would not believe the how much Porsche re engineered the car for the oval dash! Nothing inside fits. Next question:)
 
The biggest issues, aside from the steering wheel being at a different height and totally different HVAC system are getting instruments working. For example the speedo on a square dash is mechanical and electronic on an oval dash. As Simon pointed out, you need a shit load of parts and as Mike said a lot won't fit I'm sure its possible but I really can't see the point and I'm usually up for pointless projects 'just to see if I can'. Fair play if you do it but the square dash set up is both lighter and simpler. I do like the reverse rev counter too.
 
Ive seen it done James, but it was a massive PITA. One crooked ex-specialist in Leeds (near to Well Lane Turbo Centre, handy that they were all close together!) adapted a wiring loom and installed an HE sensor in the transaxle, but it was a dash fire waiting to happen and the cost was high, even if you could do the work yourself.
