Foam in front bonnet rib?

Does anyone have the answer as to why there is expanding foam in the front bonnet rib near catch on bonnet? I read on web it could have been to stop water ingress around the catch.
I ask because when the PDR guy removed two small bonnet marks last week he needed to poke with weapons through the foam in two directions. He needed to break the foam away (easily) to have the scope for maneuvering the chosen weapons. I've now tidied it up by clearing away from the aperture evenly.
 
Hi, my 86 944 has it too, not applied neatly either. Being ex-automotive, we applied it to either improve side impact result in collision test or dampen out vibration and noise.
