Winter use / winter tyres?

Hi Folks,

As a wise man once said, if you use it only occasionally then you only get the change to enjoy it occasionally.

Just wondering if anybody is using a 987 all year round?

Particularly if doing a high mileage, say 20k pa.

I’m giving serious consideration to putting 4 good winter tyres or all seasons on mine and using it through the Scottish winter.

Would love to hear thoughts on this, and also any preventative maintenance or preemptive works to minimise the fall out!

I used my 986 Boxster for a commute in to Aberdeen all year round. Did 150000 miles in 14 years or so with a single water pump failure. For the rest just wear and tear. Winter tyres November through March. Only other thing is a corrosion problem - I think at the sight of repairs from an incident quite early in the cars life in spite of repairs by an Official Repair Shop. I would definitely take time to better protect the underside through the winter with Lanoguard, Waxoyl or equivalent. Enjoy!

Amazing! That’s really good to hear, it’s Aberdeenshire into the cityish is my commute too.

I use my Macan all year and fit a spare set of 18” shells to it from end October to Beginning of April with winter tyres in them. They work really well at stopping the car and driving through the small rivers we get running across the roads in Scotland. The braking distance is much the same as my Summer tyres which has scared a few tailgaters too. (And me when I have seen their antics behind me!)

Thanks Robin, I was more thinking how the far more fragile little (and 18 year old) Boxster would fair during high mile & winter use! I can’t imagine anything better than a Macan on winter tyres………a far cry from trying to shovel snow and ice off my canvas top and wrestle with my lack of heated seats

I had a 2003 Boxster S and used it all year round on Summer tyres and had no issues really other than on snow and even then if you were gentle you were ok. Just jet wash and snow foam as much as you can to get the salt off. Winter tyres were not around in uk in 2004 to 2008. If they were I didn’t see them else I would have fitted them then.

Not a boxster but I drove an a4 convertible year round for 13 years and 180k miles.

Never did anything with the roof except wash it with clean water and a sponge - no treatments or waterproofing etc. was absolutely fine.

Keep the drains clear and wash of the salt and I doubt you will have any troubles.

Superb, great to hear! Yeah, the salt will be the biggest issue. I do my Hilux every summer and it still looks like the titanic underneath by the end of the winter! The buggers were still salting the roads in April this year. Mental

Hi Dave, have owned my 2010 987 for 10 years now and used it all year round, also in Aberdeenshire. Not a daily commuter, only 4-5K miles annually. Car came with optional 19" wheels, bought a set of 18s with winter tyres. Swap them each winter/summer, replaced the first set of winter tyres last year due to age. Paint chips at the bottom of the front wheel arch lips needed attention. Also, under the front wheel arches, there is an area around the top of the spring/strut that is not protected by the wheel arch liners and has no stone chip protection. This had surface rust. It is a fairly thick box section so no perforation, but I cleaned it all back to bare metal, treated, primed, painted and stone chip applied. There is a rubber grommet that can be removed to allow an inspection camera in. Clean as a whistle. Also applied additional chip protection to the underside of the sills.
