As is our R3 tradition, Clear Away the Cobwebs will take place on the first Sunday in April. After our trip into North Yorkshire last year, this year we will be heading to the north of our region, with a brief sortie into the Scottish borders.
We’ll start at Belsay Hall, where staff are kindly opening early for us at 9am, allowing us to park in front of the Hall for photos. We have arranged breakfast butties & tea/coffee for £7 per person in the Old Kitchen tearooms, to be booked in advance so staff have an idea of numbers.
We will head north from Belsay, for Rothbury, skirting the Cheviot Hills, a brief stint on the A68, to take us briefly into Scotland. From there we’ll head back into Northumberland towards Wooler, with our end stop at Ad Gefrin in Wooler.
For those who haven’t yet heard, Ad Gefrin is Northumberland’s newest whisky distillery, named after the nearby home of the 7th century kings & queens of the Anglo Saxon Royal Court.
We’ve negotiated a discounted price of £20 per person which includes tours of the museum, Great Hall & distillery, followed by a whisky tasting. For the drivers, the distillery will provide a drivers’ dram to take home. If you’d prefer just to do the tour that’s £8 per person. Ad Gefrin have asked that if you are not doing the tours or lunch that you park in the general town parking.
Our private buffet lunch of salad, soup, sandwiches & dessert is £20 per head.
The plan is to split us into groups, bringing us all together for the whisky tasting after lunch.
You’re then free to head home at your leisure on your own route, at your own pace.
