October news

This month's news from your 944 Register

Members’ cars
Hello to all 944-ers. I’ve recently had a couple of emails. One from a long time and serial owner (much like myself!) who has had his forever 2.7 for a couple of years, having first got the bug in 2022. The second, from David, whom I’ll quote:

“Hi Mike, I’ve just enjoyed reading your piece in PP and would like to introduce myself as a new 944 owner.

Member David’s 1990 S2 cabriolet

“We actually bought our car on Tuesday this week from Porsche Centre Swindon. It’s a 1990 944 S2 cabriolet in Guards Red with linen interior and the mileage is 56,000. It’s in very good order, as I suppose you’d expect coming from an official Porsche Classic dealer, and we plan to use it for touring both in the UK and Europe. This is our first transaxle car but we also have a Macan, and in the past, we’ve had 911s and a Cayman, so we’re well used to the Porsche brand. The first European trip for the car is to Brittany for 10 days with the Midland Automobile Club towards the end of September.
“We’ll look forward to following the 944 group in the Porsche Club.”

I think this shows the timeless appeal of the 944. You don’t need massive power or the latest tech when the whole package is so balanced and totally useable. I love the colour combo of David’s new car and the red piping sets the interior off beautifully. I hope the tour goes well and would love to see the photos.

Black S2 cabriolet restoration
I have finally got the black S2 cabriolet I reported on last month onto my drive! I’ve had a day and two half days on it. The roof has been reproofed, both mirrors are off, with new motors installed and ready for testing when the battery is replaced. The mats have been cleaned, the front bumper is properly attached and the indicator lens replaced. That’s just the exterior.

Under the bonnet, it’s had the timing chain and slipper pads replaced (probably for the first time), the cover cleaned, the lettering picked out in black, the cover bolts and their domed washers also treated to some paint and a full set of gaskets.

The front end has had new crank, cam and balance seals and some new rollers and pulleys (some looked great some didn’t), new belts and it’s all timed, including resetting the cam timing, as I forgot to lock the cam pulley to the timing trigger disc… The water pump is not original, so that has been left for the time being,

The plug leads look and feel relatively new, but the king lead (probably original) was very brittle and cracked, so that has been replaced.

Underneath looks very good, nothing more light surface corrosion anywhere!

Lots more to do, but it’s a start!

Let me know about your projects...

Cheers,

Mike
