Great news for Sportomatic owners - Porsche has re-introduced magnesium crankcases for models between 1968 and 1976, which covers most of the cars. Magnesium was originally selected to save weight on the engine prior to the use of aluminium, which hangs behind the rear axle on the 911. With care a lot have survived for over 50 years, nevertheless, the material is subject to deterioration and porosity or cracks can appear.
