July news

This month's news from your 911 Sportomatic Register

It’s that time of the year again
As I write this, my Sporto sits with Autofarm for a ‘low mileage minor service’ and some fettling. The column switches are a definite weak point on most of the 911s up to 1989 and, true to form, the light switch is playing up. With the dipped beam selected the lights change from dipped to main beam over any significant bump in the road. A couple of years ago I could not select main beam but, after some manipulation of the contacts, this was cured.

However, although further manipulation may temporarily fix the issue, some of the parts are plastic and after time are likely to be brittle. A few years ago I had to replace the wiper/indicator switch, so the light switch has probably done its duty and needs to be replaced.

The Sporto system on my car has always worked without any issues apart from a slight oil leak on the main shaft. This manifests itself by a weep down the rear of the torque converter even though I have had the seal replaced quite a few times. Apparently Porsche changed the makeup of the seal in some way a few years back and the new version has the propensity to leak if not regularly kept under pressure i.e. by running the car. If the car is left standing for a period of time there is the possibility the seal will ‘relax’ and start to pass oil; not a significant amount but enough to be visible. I’ve given up worrying about it, as it seems there is no cure in my case.
