The gearstick gaiter on the 911SC can often split or deteriorate with age. To replace it following the standard procedure requires the gear knob to be removed from the gearstick, something that requires the gear knob to be hit from below with a high risk of damaging it.

Gear lever housing secured with 5 bolts

Fortunately, Richard - our resident Technical Advisor - shares with us his clever alternative option, which may save you the expense of having to buy a brand new original gear knob.

Sliding new gaiter over metal tab made easier with a little warmth

This alternative option involves taking off the gearstick selection housing secured by five bolts. This will allow you to remove the gearstick by removing the two securing locks and pushing out the pin.

With this done you will be able to push the new gaiter up the gearstick lever, the only challenge being to get it past the fifth gear selection piece (metal tab).
The trick here is to warm the gaiter up to make it more pliable and use a blunt screwdriver to prise it over the protruding tab of metal.
With no damage to your precious gear knob the unit can be screwed back into your car.
