Thruxton skills training day

Our thanks to Pat Coneley and Shaun Cronin from IAM RoadSmart for their support and insight into this event, you really do not want to miss this one. The information below was kindly put together by Pat and covers most of the frequently asked questions. It’s also worth having a look at the links at the bottom.

Your R19 Organisers in association with IAM RoadSmart are pleased to offer a skills training day at Thruxton Circuit and Skid Pan for exclusively for R19 members on 1 August at a total price of £225 per driver.

The day will comprise separate two elements:

  • Open pit lane driving on the full 2.4-mile circuit in your own car with an IAMRS qualified Instructor who will be allocated to two R19 members for each half-day session.
  • Training with an ARDS qualified Instructor on the Thruxton Skid Pan Facility using both front and rear wheel drive cars with the safety systems on and off. There will also be an opportunity to repeat this using your own for those who wish to.

What is a Thruxton skills day?
It is not a race or trackday. It is road-based training using the safe, controlled environment of a motorsport venue. The emphasis is on smoothness and accuracy of position on track and of driver inputs. The outcome of this is that you may well be driving faster at the end of the day. However, you will not be encouraged to ‘drive fast’ or do anything that you are not comfortable with. There will be no timed laps.

Do I need a helmet or any special gear?
No, just a road legal car and driver.

Who is this for?
Anyone who enjoys their Porsche and wishes to build on their road driving experience safely.

If you are an experienced trackday enthusiast, then this may not be for you. If you have considered a trackday but have been put off by the potential risk and cost, then this is.

Do I have to be an IAMRS member?
No. If you have so much fun that you want to join, you would be very welcome!

Why is the day so inexpensive?
Several reasons. IAMRS is a Road Safety Charity so do not have to charge commercial rates and has a strong historical relationship with the Thruxton Circuit management who are pleased to support these days.

All the Instructors are passionate about driving and coaching so donate their time for free.

Are there lunch facilities at the circuit?
The Thruxton Suite Thruxton has an excellent café with indoor and outdoor dining area.

Are non-driving members welcome?
Yes. The Thruxton Suite has a balcony viewing area.
