December news

This month’s news from your Essex Region

Firstly, we wish all our members and their families a happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year. We hope to bring you new and interesting events next year, so please keep an eye out for our monthly newsletters.

Cars and coffee at Garagista Car Storage
On 15 October, around 50 members of R11 attended the first cars and coffee event to be held at the newly launched Garagista Car Storage facility in Essex. Owned and managed by historic racer Shaun Lynn and R11 member James Velacott, this new facility certainly impressed us.

Very special Porsches on display for R11 visit to Garagista

On display was a Porsche 956 chassis number 956-117, the Le Mans winner from 1984-85, plus a full-scale model of the 2023 Le Mans Jota Porsche 963. Also on display were F3 and Le Mans race cars and a Porsche tractor.

Along with bacon rolls and hot drinks, members enjoyed a Q&A session with historic racer Shaun Lynn and Jota Sport team boss Sam Hignett. A great morning, and we received positive feedback from members.

Wine and dine in France
Some of you may remember the name Guy Boursot from our previous gourmet weekends in France. Guy is an Anglo-French wine merchant/consultant, who organises wine tastings and vineyard tours and has a wine shop in Ardres in France.

Consequently, we commissioned Guy to set up an R11 wine and dine event at the Hotel Matelote at Boulogne-sur-Mer which is on the channel coast close to Calais and easily accessible.

If you haven’t been to Boulogne-sur-Mer it is well worth a visit. A quite large, modern coastal town that has grown around the core of a historic old town with original walls and buildings.

Twenty-nine members in 15 Porsches stayed at Hotel Matelote for the weekend with our Porsches tucked away in the hotel’s garages. After a morning sightseeing, we made our way back to the hotel for a 4pm wine tasting that included six wines selected by Guy to suit a variety of palates. Having sampled these most thoroughly we then returned to our rooms to sober up and change for evening dinner before starting the next tasting session.

We enjoyed a very fine dinner specially prepared for us and Guy selected another six wines to compliment the menu which we sampled most thoroughly again.

After breakfast on Sunday morning some of us visited Guy’s shop in Ardres while others either continued their journeys to other areas or made their way home on the Sunday or the Monday. All in all, a most enjoyable way to spend a weekend in late September with excellent company.
