Porsche Championships to be Settled at Snetterton

Round 7 Snetterton 300 October 7th

The Snetterton 300 circuit on Saturday October 7th hosts the final two rounds of the Porsche Club Motorsport Championship with Pirelli and Woods Foodservice Porsche Club Motorsport Boxster Cup seasons with the overall champion in the Club series still to be decided and second and third to be confirmed in the Boxster Cup. Drivers count their best 12 scores from the 14-race season, and with the addition of ten bonus points for the final two races there are ample points on offer and it will be a busy day with each series having two 25-minute races.

In the Club Championship Oliver Chatham heads class two and the overall championship table, but with dropped scores taken into account his lead disappears and potentially four drivers could be challenging for the title. The top two drivers in each class are all possible outright winners, and we have seen in the past that fortunes can change dramatically even in the very last race of the year.

Chatham has taken three wins in the Boxster dominated class two and been on the podium in the previous eight races to continue his title charge. He sits 14-points clear of closest rival Paul Simpson who is second in class two and on a run of form having taken a win and a second at the Festival of Porsche at Brands Hatch in early September and is another potential strong contender.

Pete Morris is 16-points clear at the top of class one and could be on course for his sixth class win since 2004 and become the first driver to claim a third title if he can overcome the 25-point deficit to Chatham, 20-points with dropped scores before Snetterton. The competition in class is strong, in second place is Mark McAleer, another double champion, who has won four of the last six races and with dropped scores matches Chatham’s total after failing to finish either race at the opening meeting of the year, if he can continue his strong end to the season then he could also be the first to claim a third title.

The Woods Foodservice Porsche Club Motorsport Boxster Cup Jonny Lovell claimed three wins at Brands Hatch last time out to seal the title after an impressive season, and while he will be eager to finish his debut Boxster Cup year in style, fully expect everyone else to still be pushing hard.

Lovell set out his stall by claiming a win in the second race of the season and from then on has been in imperious form, taking 10 wins from the 12 races to date. He has been pushed hard in some races, Mike Thompson taking a win at Silverstone in July and currently second in the points, a position he finished in last season, and Thompson will want to be best of the rest once more.

A strong second half to the season has seen Faye Noble-Evans move into third in the points overtaking Vikram Sudera, but if you take out their two lowest scores to date the pair are tied for third. They have battled hard on the track at several races so far this season, and that battle will continue, although Thompson is possibly out of reach unless he hits problems.

With the best twelve scores counting from the 14 races, a couple of other drivers come into contention for the battle for third if you take out their two lowest scores. Sarah Thomson has claimed a pole at Snetterton before and sits just seven points back from Noble-Evans and Sudera, while Eric Bridges is eight points further back but still a potential contender.

The Boxster field start the day with their qualifying session at 09.00 ahead of races at 11.30 and 14.35. The Club Championship racers qualify at 10.55 and then race at 13.20 and 16.50.
