Overfill the oil

Just picked up the 987 Gen 2 (after a service) and after about 50 miles the check oil level message came up - after much hunting about it seemed to be overfull - the garage sent a mechanic to attempt to remove some. He failed (but very limited by the roadside) but the garage arranged for it to be taken to a local garage so it could be drained properly. Over a period of 10 minutes they managed to extract over 9 litres of oil - it should be 7.5!

At this stage no names of the people involved but thoughts on what the excess oil may have caused - no blue smoke, no obvious problems but just curious/concerned.

Whilst not great news, 1.5 litres spread over the sump volume probably hasn't had a siginificant detremental effect, especially if you haven't been ragging the engine in the 50 miles.

There may have been a little bit more oil splashing the bores than usual, and the AOS may have been working a little harder, but you've picked up the problem quickly so I wouldn't worry too much.

The tech who did the job needs to get his knuckles rapped for not checking the oil level post service..!

Thanks for the reassurance! Luckily the wife was driving and she has a very light foot!

Speaking to the Service Manager I get the impression that the tech is probably on life support!

Must admit the later 987.1 and 987.2 do not have a dip stick which means you rely totally on the electronic one.
You cannot be sure how much oil has been drained and if it was left long enough to drain fully. It is actually quite a difficult job to get right - Need to ensure that the garage knows what they are doing

A full Service History does not necessarily mean that the job has been done properly and in some cases a keen owner will do a better job than the so called professionals

Sound like you are OK but the 987.2 engine was the best to date.

Lucky you spotted it because proving that the garage got it wrong after an engine failure would have been difficult.

Also the electronic reader does not really allow for excessive overfilling .

Apologies for the contradiction

Its a very simple job. You put 6 litres in, warm up the engine to std, engage the oil measuring system from menu and top up accordingly approximately quarter a litre per segment.

The mention of a service manger makes it likely its an OPC
 
This is how the display shows you it's been overfilled. The key is that it's above the top arrow.

Thanks for all the advice and comments - general conclusion (from local OPC) is that as long as you have not been revving it hard and not for too long then it "should" be ok.

One of the problems is if the oil is not completely drained then putting in the "Correct" amount of oil will over fill it !!
As you say slowly top it up till its correct then check
Would probably take 2 hours to do the job properly BUT only about 1/2 of time~
Not sure if a centre would be happy tying up a ramp for that long!!
 
I replaced the oil in my 2012 981 at the end of last year as the onboard software was stating an oil change every 12 months but the minor/major service recommendations was every 24 months which I wasn't comfortable with.
Before draining when checking the oil level, it used to indicate 3/4 when cold and at max when hot.
As there is no dipstick and no guarantee you will drain all the contents, I measured what came out and then refilled with exactly the same amount.
Mine now shows 1/2 when cold and 3/4 when hot.

You can always top up in small increments which is much easier than draining out excess due to overfill.
