Oil pressure failure warning light

Hi all, first post from me. I have had my C4S (2004) for about 9 months and I have had the Oil pressure failure warning light appear today. At the same time, the pressure dropped to zero and then shot up to 5 and stayed there. I have read some posts from other forums about a sender unti etc but not the pressure shooting up to 5. Any ideas/advice gratefully received.

Sounds very much like a faulty sender unit to me, when mine failed it went straight to 5 bar.
A fairly easy DIY job to replace.

Type "Porsche 996 oil pressure sender replacement" into Google. You'll be amazed at what you will find! Looks like you will need a special 19mm crow's foot tool to do it.
They say it's only a 10-15 min job so, personally, I would pay someone else to do it!

Looks like most people have already provided good advice. In short, mine did the same - including the spiking up to 5bar and remaining there. I checked the oil levels manually (on the flat, cool engine etc) so I knew I didn't have an oil "amount" issue. Then when I got it serviced I asked the indy to check and replace as needed. They were very good, gave me an update and replaced the part as part of the service other than factoring in the price of the unit (which as mentioned above is not a lot).
 
Hi Just had my pressure sensor replaced.

I had the oil can appear on the computer screen for only a split second than it disappeared.

Oil pressure gauge read 5 bar whilst driving and about 3.5 bar when idling. It also read 2 bar with just the ignition turned on and engine not running when cold. Booked into Porsche for a new sensor and just as I pulled up the gauge started behaving normally again. Decided to have it replaced anyway and pressure gauge is more stable and reading correctly. Mechanic said sometimes the sensor valve can stick and then free again hence the return to normal. Not worth messing about with for the cost.

Cost was about £50.0 for the sensor and £100.0 to fit it. Evidently it takes 0.8 of an hour to change.

Yep my C4S did exactly the same thing at 9 k miles only scary at the time seeing no oil pressure quickly stopped started engine again pressure again.
Intermittent issue turned out to be the oil pressure sender easy fairly cheap fix.

 
I did mine last week myself, watched a video on you-tube and then got on with it after grinding down my crows foot as per the video. Simple job but a bit fiddly, probably took me 30mins once I had the tool modified. No more dodgy oil pressure readings. Sender cost £65 fro OPC.
