New 19 inch tyres needed for a 2008 Boxster

I have Bridgestone Potenza RE050A N1 rated tyres on my Boxster which has 19 inch Carrera Sport wheels. I've been offered a good deal ( and been recommended) on Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tyres which are not N rated. Any views on these tyres please or other recommendations. My insurer has OK'd the Michelins.

thanks

I guess if insurance are ok with none N rated and you don't have a warranty all will be ok.
Tyres you mentioned seem to be flavour of the moment.
Choice is a personal thing.

I just went for Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 N2's.
I'm happy with them, also coming from the Bridgestone RE050A, though mine were N0's.

PS2 N2's still have a nice big rim protector on.

PS4s seem very very highly rated. I just wanted the N rated ones, rightly or wrongly.

Don't think you can go wrong with the Michelin choice mate

My opinion is, go for the Michelin PS4S, even though the 19" sizes are non-N rated, especially if you do the occasional track day.

Brian mentioned elsewhere that on his 20" rims the N rated PS4S provide better rim protection than the non-N rated. Can anyone with first hand experience say whether on 19" rims the N rated PS4S provide better rim protection than the non-N rated?
Thanks, Andrew.

Andrew,

My understanding is, Michelin do not make N rated PS4S tyres in 19"sizes. The PS4S N0 are specifically for the 20" rims on 718 Cayman/Boxster in 235 and 265 sections. The N0 tyres also fit satisfactorily on the 981 Cayman/Boxster 20" rims.

Only the N-rated 20" PS4S tyres have rim protection side walls.

Brian,
Thanks for replying, and in doing so you’ve made me realise I didn’t ask the question as I intended to. What I meant to ask is does anyone have any first hand knowledge of whether the non-N rated 19” PS4S offer more, less, or the same rim protection as the N rated 19” PS2?

Thanks Andrew.

This is a photo of a non-N rated 19" Michelin PS4S on a Cayman R.

Rim protection is not so pronounced as on the N0 version.

Brian

Thanks Brian!
The picture of your R wheel clearly illustrates the minimal rim protection of the non-N rated PS4S on 19” rims.

I’d be lot happier with the rim protection shown on your 20” wheels.
Andrew.

Are the OZ a even wider tyre so the ps4s is streached a little more ?

I have quite a lot of rim protection on my Spdyer wheels with non N spec PS4S.
Looks the same as the 718 N spec to me.

Yes D, I was wondering about that myself (I assume that that you meant that the OZ wheel could be wider?).

I can't see why there'd be any difference between the N and non N-rated tyres. Surely they would use the same mould?

Jeff

Unlikely the OZ wheels on Kevin's CR would be wider than my 718 8.5" and 10.5" Carrera Sport alloys.

Both the non-N rated, and N0 PS4S are generic 235 front, and 265 rear.

It looks to me that Michelin pushed the boundaries for the 235 and 265 sections of the 718 20" PS4S N0. Maybe that's why Porsche delayed the N0 accreditation for almost 12 months as they looked too racy for a cooking 718.

Brian

From the above three posts it would appear that PS4S should give the same rim protection as the PS2 fitted to my Carrera Sport wheels.
Thanks.
