Hello there,

Sorry I’ve not been on here for a long time, it’s been 3 years! A lot has happened, for example buying my first house and moving in with my partner and her two boys. With saving up for the house, sacrifices had to be made – and one of them was SORN’ing the 944. Now that we’re settled, the plan was to get the 944 back on the road this Spring, however a few months ago we had the wonderful news of a baby on the way! Sadly though, after much thought, discussion and deliberation… we’ve come to the conclusion that it’s just not feasible for us to put her back on the road, indeed we’re in desperate need of a new family car – probably one of those hideous but spacious SUVs to accommodate the expanding family.

So it is with great reluctance and sadness, that I must part with my beloved 944. Before I take this on Autotrader and such like, I want to offer this here first to you guys – who have helped me out greatly over the years and I know will treasure her as much as I have. I’ll live in the hope that maybe in a few years I can come back here and speak to the buyer seeing if he/she will be willing to sell back! Who knows!!

The above photos I believe were taken about 3 or 4 years ago. Since then I’ve kept her in an underground garage, and for the last year at my new house on a drive way under car cover in cold/bad weather. She had a full re-spray in the early 2000’s, but IMHO the interior looks especially stunning which had brand new seats, new black carpets all around, etc. (And yes the clock still works!)

I purchased the vehicle in June 2010, and what I know of the previous owner it was also his pride and joy (hence new interior and full respray). At some point, I believe when he first bought it, it has had a new engine – although sadly details are missing for this.

SERVICE HISTORY

The service history goes back to 2000 for the 10 years he owned it, sadly the history before that is missing – but I’ve kept a comprehensive service history of my own organised in date order in a giant folder for you.

Dw0ftNw.jpg

service%20history.jpg

Since I’ve owned it I’ve spent around £6000 on getting the rest of the car up to scratch. For example it’s had a whole new stainless steel Dansk exhaust system, full service, and lots of engine work done to fix oil leaks and pressure. Anything else that was due to be replaced soon has been (eg brakes pads, disks, advisories, etc), any issue I encountered was immediately looked at and worked on.

I’ve written it all out below for you. Last full service with belts etc was 2011 – but I’ve not done a great deal of miles since then -

=====

It will obviously need an MOT. HPI clear. And I’ll try and go over other important details and issues as honestly as possible for you below.

DRIVING

I only owned one 944 previous to this one, so hard for me to compare with other 944’s, but the difference with this one compared to the last was very noticeable in terms of performance – I was shocked how good it was. To me, it pulled really smoothly and strongly through all gears; performance was great! – I was totally comfortable on both long motorway journeys and erm having a little fun on country B-roads. However it did feel to me that after a long day of stop-start journeys when the car was very hot it didn’t perform quite as well, and on rare occasion a slight judder on the breaking point. It was never an issue for me though because I’d have a lovely drive to my destination – do whatever it was – drive home happy. When we last drove it to my new house it did fire up OK, but was getting a little hot. Probably needs a minor service and running a few times over so everything is ticking over as normal.

INTERIOR

mYPDqrg.jpg

Already mentioned above, and one of the big selling points of the car for me. Stunning new seats, interior carpets and ceiling (black) and foot mats (red) – is a real ‘wow’ factor IMO. The square dash really suits the car and the work done, and is fine, but there is some slight cracking on top of it around corners of the vents. Clock and dials all work apart from the MPG estimator (which I’m told was inaccurate and useless).

ELECTRICALS

All working as expected – electric mirrors, rear defroster, hot/cold air conditioning, fog lights, pop-up lights, boot opener, etc. There was an alarm fitted centre of dash that was disconnected when I bought it (I believe it was a Cobra alarm and was causing some ignition issues), I’ve left it there because it’s a visual deterrent but looks like it can be easily removed taking out a couple of screws. Electric CD player and radio works fine, although the radio antenna seized up.

One issue we didn’t get fully resolved before I took the car off the road was the temperature sensor / radiator fan which wasn’t coming on when it should. As a temporary fix a switch was fitted to the centre console to turn the fan on manually. From what I remember we tried about 3 different replacement temp sensors from Porsche but still had the same issue – so the next thing we were going to do is get an after market temperature sensor and fit that.

One other issue was with the windscreen washer system, it was leaking fluid. We last replaced the T-valves and hoses, but that didn’t resolve it. May need a new tank.

Currently doesn’t have a battery, the last one I forgot to disconnect and we couldn’t get recharged so had to borrow one to move it to my new house. If I get any interest on here I will buy a new battery for anyone wanting to come out and take a look.

EXTERIOR

Guards red (the fastest colour!) and had a full respray in the early 2000’s. When I purchased in 2010 it looked perfect to me, but since then it has developed bubbling and rust issues around the edges of the outer sills, and one other area with bubbling. This would have been my next job on the car this year to sort. See pics below for full disclosure -

Also looks like someone tried to break in with a screw driver above the passenger door handle causing this sadly -
yEinm1h.jpg

porsche944_issues_1.jpg

In late 2013 I had my trusted garage look into rust issues for me but found no issues on the inner sills and floor pan, and applied some new protection. Rust was a big thing for me, my first 944 (some of you may remember my mammoth topic many years back) basically collapsed on a garage lift due to serious rust issues and had to be scrapped so I was very careful with my next 944. The outer sill rust started to appear in 2015 just before I had to SORN her, and was kept in an underground garage.

A lot of work was done by myself on the boot so that it would correctly open by itself from using the electric switch and close correctly and securely – it had a whole new set of pins, mechanism, and rubber mounts fitted.

No sun roof. I figured that was a good thing, given the amount of rain we have and water collecting there – often a source of rust issues and it was something I didn’t need to worry about.

Tyres – new front tyres fitted July 2013, but not driven much since then. Rear tyres are fine, plenty of tread, but getting on a bit so could do with being replaced in the future. Original Porsche alloys in good condition.

Anything else included?

I downloaded and had printed out at a printers the full Porsche service manuals in several huge folders at quite a cost! There are also some decals for the side of the car and above the rear bumper included that I hadn’t got round to adding to the car. Spare key.

If you have any questions at all I will do my very best to answer them here.

Anyone interested and wanting to come view – please send me a private message via the forum and we can arrange this, will be happy to give out phone number there. Just want to make sure you’re a member of this forum, and that I don’t get any traders/pests finding my details.

Cheers!
Al

Now the weather has got nice, any takers or interested people?

Not been pushing this, been busy with the arrival of the baby. Had to borrow some money and get the new family car, so now really need to be finding a good home for my 944 :)

Sorry it took a while, dealing with a new born baby and 2 grumpy young boys.

I've taken some now as best I can with the mobile and uploaded some -

That's the thing, I really have no idea in today's market. I'd be happy to hear your suggestions Paul because I know you are the most respected on this forum, and your advice on other issues years ago helped my greatly! Even if you'd rather PM me directly if uncomfortable posting in the topic.

I'm aware of the rising prices of these over the last few years, but I understand that some will be put off by rust issues, however I'd rather this go into the loving hands of someone from here - I dread putting this on AutoTrader. There's certainly more chance of someone from here appreciating the love and care that went into restoring the interior, and the £6k+ spent on the mechanics/everything under the bonnet/etc - everything that was needed doing was done (bodywork would have been next). Until I took it off the road, it was a fabulous runner with some minor issues to sort out with temp sensor, etc.
