New Michelin PS4S N0 Tyres

I had a set of the new N0 rated Michelin PS4S tyres fitted to my 718 Cayman S this week.

Compared to my previous Pirelli P-Zero N1's the profile is dramatically different. On my wider 20" rims, the P-Zero's seemed stretched, particularly on the rear wheels, even though the tyre section sizes and profile values are identical in both brands. The PS4S N0 tyres on the other hand, fill the rim width properly and give my car a more purposeful look.

Regarding comparative tyre performance, the public road is not the place to explore this, but so far I would say the PS4S N0 runs quieter on rural roads, and the steering response is sharper too. I'll have to wait until my next track day before I can report on the true performance of the new Michelins. I have the feeling I'll not be disappointed.

Steve,

My Michelin PS4S N0 tyres were purchased through my local Michelin specialist retailer, GT Tyres, Forres, Morayshire, with whom I have had a long and successful partnership over many years for tyres and Hunter wheel alignment services.

I paid £942 for the set of 4 tyres including VAT, balancing and fitting. This price may not be replicated as retail tyre prices change daily.

That's really good, the lowest price I can get is with blackcircles, online, delivered but not fitted, and its about £1050.
I'm going to have them fitted when I get my wheels refurbed, so the only cost should be £6 to dispose of the old ones. Exeter OPC wants £192 just to fit them.
However, where you are is a bit too far for me to get to just for some tyres.
thanks

I was really hoping that they'd be available in GT4 friendly 295/30ZR20 and 245/35ZR20 (N rated) but seemingly not. Shame, they'd suit my usage better than the Cups, especially at this time of year.

I was told by Michelin customer services that the PS4S N rated tyres were initially for the 718 Boxster/Cayman models only. The tyres were originally meant to be ready for the UK launch of the 718 in late 2016, but Porsche put an embargo on the PS4S N0's until further testing had been completed.

The profile of the N0 PS4S was so dramatically different to the P-Zero N1 fitted to my 718 Cayman S at delivery in December 2016. I complained at the time that I considered the P-Zero N1 265 section rear tyres to be over-stretched on my wider 10.5" 20" alloys. The new PS4S N0 now overlaps the rims on my 718 20" wheels. The Michelin PS4S are also rated Extra Load, whereas the P-Zeros were Standard Load.

I suspect Porsche development boffins took one look at the new N0 PS4S and thought, "hang on, these new Michelins look very racy, let's have another test before we sign them off for OE fitting".

That may explain why my front PS4S N0 are dated week 45 of 2016, while the rears are dated week 38 of 2017. Obviously some adjustments were made by Michelin in the intervening period.

Brian,

Thank you for the feedback and details, GT Tyres are chasing Michelin regards fitment to my 981 CS ... given that pp the Porsche listing for my car they are unsurprisingly `not there`.

Steve,

My local OPC quoted me £1185 fitted.

....

When I asked Michelin `online` if the 235 and 265/35 x 20 N0 were `model specific` they replied ... no. When I asked why the N0 tyres were rated B for wet grip whereas the non N0 rated of the same sizes were A rated they could not answer and have passed to their technical people.

Michelin`s response ...

" Sometimes as part of the tuning for homologation or approval, for Porsche or any other manufacturer, we may tune compounds or tread pattern to meet the needs of the particular vehicle/manufacturer

However, the difference between the non N and N marked tyre could be only small fractions of a metre.

I would therefore strongly recommend the "N” marked tyre as it’s performance is tuned and specific for that car. It may be slightly worse in the wet, but could also be significantly better in many other areas. "

Andrew,

Reading the above reply from Michelin regarding the PS4S N0, it seems to add weight to the statements I received from Michelin customer services earlier this year, that the tyre was specifically designated in N rated sizes applicable only to the 718 chassis.

In the future, other sizes may well be included in the N rated versions of the PS4S, but we all know how Porsche seems to avoid retro-testing N rated tyres for older models.

I've just bought a set from blackcircles , £1002 delivered. I've had quite a bit of trouble to get them, as they only have 3 left now of the fronts, and Michelin are giving a 10 week delivery time to them, not out to dealers.
There are plenty of rears available in the 20 inch size. I just wonder why they have only 3 fronts left, who would just buy one tyre?

Maybe someone had a puncture.........

Be interested to hear your first impressions of the PS4S N0. The fronts were made earlier, at least mine were, in week 45 of 2016. The rears are dated almost a year later in week 38 of 2017, so obviously some re-thinking done on the construction of the rears imo.

It's a black art, Porsche N rated tyres......
