Trial SIM for Connect Plus almost ended, what did you replace with?

Hi all,

I got a 2 month trial SIM from EE with my 718 and it's due to expire tomorrow (12th September). I've called EE and they have no record of the SIM card at all so I can't continue with it.

Can I just replace it with a standard SIM-only SIM or do I need a specific one for data use in a car?

I'm thinking of going with GiffGaff for £10 a month for 2GB data, anyone know any better?

Thanks,
Richard.

Hi

I'm due to collect my new 718 Monday. Would you know if its standard to give a 2 month trial with the sim?

Regarding your question about what to do next. Can you not just turn your phone to be a hot spot when your in the car? As its my first Porsche I'm unsure if you can even do that?

Thanks Jamie

Hi Jamie,

for the MY18 718's I think it's changed a bit. The car now comes with a built-in SIM card and includes data for non-streaming Connect services. It also has a WiFi module but in order for other users to connect to that you'll need to purchase an additional data package. But you can also insert your own data SIM and all data and WiFi then passes through that SIM. I guess you'll have to compare packages and see which ones works out cheaper for you.

So I'm not sure they'll give you a trial SIM now as it sounds like you get a certain amount of free data anyway, but check all this out with your OPC. If you do decide to use your own SIM you'll need to get a data SIM, I went for a 12 month mobile broadband contract on Three, 5gb of data per month for £11 a month.

And yes you can use your phone as a hotspot but Porsche don't seem to recommend this. They say you need to activate the hotspot each time you get into the car, and I've also read on numerous forums that people struggle connecting this way. So I decided to get the SIM as the data connection will always be there.

You should get an email from you OPC soon to setup your Porsche Car Connect so it's all ready for you when you pick up the car. You register and setup a Porsche ID and it gives you a code that you then have to send to the OPC so they can unlock your car for the Porsche Car Connect service. You just need to download the app on to your phone and you can then see the status of the car, trip information, geofencing etc... quite useful.

This is my first Porsche too, and the first fully connected car I've owned, so there's lots to get your head around. I still struggle remembering where things are in all the menus on the car!!

Hope all this helps and enjoy collection day.

Richard.

I have always gotten a 12GB (12 month validity) 4G data only SIM from Three. Usually £35 to £40 (bizarrely cheaper on Amazon than direct from Three). Works throughout Europe too which is super handy when travelling.

Anyone tried using their phone as the mobile hotspot or have any idea how to do it? I just want to be able to upload the latest speed camera files to the nav system - thank you.
