Squealing Brakes - Macan SD

i am alone with being plagued by squealing brakes on my Macan SD?

At around 15k miles I developed a horrible shrill when lightly touching the brakes. I had Porsche Sutton Coldfield take a look on my first service and the problem dissapeared for about 500 miles but has returned several times. The car has been in a further twice to the dealership for the same problem and is about to return for the brakes squealing next week.

I have now done 28k miles and told, as I mainly do motorway driving, there is still a good life left in the discs and pads. The dealership tells me they deglaze the pads each time, but I am not totally convinced , as after 500 miles the squealing returns as bad as ever . It has been suggested by the dealership I could replace the disc and pads , at my cost, and this should solve the problem , but I am loathed to do this if the originals are defective or the same problem will return.

Have any any others experienced this or have suggestions as to how to play this with the dealership?

Hi Gary,
Welcome to the forum.

After 26K in our Macan SD, we've not yet experienced your brake problem. I'm guessing you've got the standard brake setup - not PCCB's.

If the problem disappears for a while after some good, hard applications, it likely just means the friction surfaces need cleaning up periodically. So give them a workout with a few high speed applications or try left foot braking to get a bit of heat into them. Also, when stationary after a good run, try not to hold the car on the brake pedal if the brakes are hot as this contaminates the friction surfaces.

The accepted way of eliminating squeal is to deglaze the surfaces (pads and rotors), renew the shims and/or use anti-squeal compound on the rears of the pads. If all this fails and assuming your using OEM components, you probably need to look a bit closer at the pads and rotors for uneven wear, use a Vernier scale to check them out. Any difference of more than say 1mm top to bottom or side to side may require some corrective work.

The most likely source of noise will come from the inner pads since these tend to be more vulnerable to moisture, dust and general detritus.

Hope this provides a few thoughts for you to ponder. [:D]

Regards,

Clive
