Power Steering

Hi. I am considering fitting an electric power-steering system to my 1985 Carrera 3.2. Has anyone any experience of this. Any recommended suppliers/fitters ? Thanks

EZ power steering has featured in a number of classic car magazines - if I remember correctly, Robert Coucher from Octane fitted it to his XK120, praise doesn't get much higher than that.

It is unobtrusive, COMPLETELY reversable and can be adjusted from no assistance to fingertip steering. It's basically an electric motor that drives the steering column when the wheel is turned.

It's not for me, but I completely understand why someone would want to fit it to a 3.2 - low speed steering can be a pain...

I had an e-mail enquiry a couple of months ago and reccomended the Dutch company. As far as I know they had fitted the electric motor in the 'smugglers hatch' in the luggage compartment. I believe they had only converted LHD cars and, unfortunately RHD cars have a different hatch so it may be a problem. If EZ have done it here then Dennis has a chance. His attachment to the car must be greater than any loss of steering feel and if it is completely reversible, no harm done.

If you do this abomination you will lose the feed back from the road and ruin the driving experience

Next people want ABS air bags and a slush gear box

Low speed and parking I can understand but for me I would prefer an hydraulic clutch system on my 915 gear box. Everyone to their own.

The bottom line is, its your vehicle. One thing I would say however is that for resale purposes some mods are better if they can be reversed and keep all items removed from your car.

I think the EZ system can be adjusted to assist only at low speeds, which, as we all know, is when the 3.2 steering is nothing short of tiresome. As I said before, it's not for me (yet - my priorities might change in 20 years...) but I can think of dozens of reasons why someone would want power assistance on a Carrera 3.2, particularly at low speed.

When all is said and done, it's the OP's car and if a spot of power assistance (especially if its completely reversable) means he enjoys the car more, who are we to criticise? I believe hair-shirts can be extremely uncomfortable!

Please don't shoot me Paul...

Hello All

I am in both camps on this. I like to keep my car original but parking is a pain.

An extra that can be fitted easily but also removed without trace is a good option and something I would even consider. I would be concerned about any loss of steering feel at speed.

At the moment I always try and park in a space that allows me a quick and easy exit.

Keep us informed of any decisions.

Regards

ALAN

I'm a bit late to this particular party but that won't stop me expressing an opinion. [:D]

I say - go for it. If it makes the car into something you will use and enjoy more then b*gger the nay-sayers. It's your car and your money. If you do go for it please do report back and ignore the flak.

Hear-hear!

The OP was pilloried for his query but I've done some more digging and can quote from a review that Johnny Tipler did:

"It makes very light work of the twisty bits, with pin-sharp turn-in, and as I flick from curve to curve I’m thinking what a fine innovation this is. It actually helps you come off a corner a little bit quicker because it is so delicately wrought.

But what’s important is that you do feel a bit of resistance against your wrist-work, and that’s down to the amount of castor that EZ has set the car up with. And as I perform a three-point turn after each pass of the camera, never has full lock-to-lock been so easy to achieve. It’s not what I was expecting of a Carrera 3.2, and I would find it very easy to live with my steering being like this.

It doesn’t lose the tactile qualities associated with non-assisted steering, and my earlier scepticism is dispelled to the extent that I think it genuinely qualifies as an improvement. Having the assistance on the ‘heavy’ setting doesn’t really make any significant difference, so ‘medium’ is where you’d get optimum driving feel, as well as useful assistance in a parking or reversing situation. It might be advantageous in a rallying context, too. Seems to us like the perfect upgrade for a wide-tyred 911 that sees regular use!"

The italics are mine but the words are Johnny's; he does know a thing or two about 911s...

Have you thought about a full suspension and steering rack refurb?

You'd be amazed how much lighter and accurate the steering is after such rebuilds, its where I spent my money - remember our cars are over 30 years old.
