I have successfully ordered a set of Zunsport grills for my Cayman R and benefitted from the discount code you supplied. They will hopefully arrive in a couple of days time, but my question is that with a Porsche warranty are they considered by OPCs to be an infringement of the warranty?

John,

Unsurprisingly, this has been a forum topic on many occasions and there really isn't a definitive answer. I suggest that you contact your preferred PC to see what they say - some don't see it as a problem and all the GT cars have mesh grilles installed as a standard fitment.

Having said that, you could always remove the grilles before services, etc.

John,

I made an enquiry of the service desk at Leicester and their reply was that in their view so long as they didn't cause a reduction in cooling airflow ( far less then a build up of leaves will ) nor be a possible cause of corrosion ( they fit into the plastic of the intake ) there should be no problem, I have them on my Cayman S they are easy to remove and refit before and after if your dealership react negatively or if you need to go in with a cooling problem.

I've not tested their reaction by going in with a cooling problem although I did have an overtemp warning on my PDK, I removed them before pulling in for a diagnostic check at another OPC on my route.

In my view the centre radiator is far too susceptible to stone impact as the radiator is relatively unprotected and very close to the intake, by the time I bought my present car it had done 32,000 mls and had a large number of impact marks in the centre rad', it really does need the grille. As Jeff says grilles are standard fitments on the GT cars check with your OPC for their take on it.

I always meant to fit a set of these but was put off as they came with a welded on "Zunsport" badge. Looking at the webpage pics this appears to have now been deleted. Can any of you who have bought these recently confirm this for me please?

Thanks

I had mine fitted (Cayman S) last year and they don't have a Zunsport badge.
BTW - OPC Bolton said they'd rule my car out for a warranty as they were non-standard and non-Porsche.

The Zunsport badge for mine came in the package and was optional to fit.  I didn't fit it so they're unbranded.

Well, that code still works - just saved £28 on a set of grilles for my 986-S - so that's nearly half of my PCGB membership justified already - and I only joined yesterday.

Thanks! (And hello...)

I asked my OPC about these grills.

They said they see a few cars with them fitted, but have to remove them for re-sale, and have spotted several have left scratches.

Are they easy to fit, and can they scratch the paint?

Yes they're easy to fit and yes they could scratch paint when removed as they use clips with teeth to attach.  On my Cayman GTS they clip to black plastic parts which could be replaced easily if required, but if you have the GTS exterior option those parts are painted so obviously more expensive.

They're a must have on a GTS in my opinion as the size of the holes in the front bumper in front of the condensors/radiators is just ridiculous and they are prone to damage.  GT cars have grilles fitted so why they didn't for the GTS is a mystery to me.  Unfortunately having them fitted means I can't buy the extended warranty for my car when the time comes.

Caveat emptor!

I have them on my 987S which has a warranty and I have asked at two of my closest OPC's, both said no problem, provided they had not caused the problem should it be brought in, when I did have a problem with my car and needed to visit another OPC I pulled into a lay-by and removed them before arriving there and popped them into a bag in the rear boot, just one Phillips head screw in each of the outer intakes ( screwdriver in the "Toolkit" ) and unhook with care to avoid scratches on the paint, the middle grille locates in two holes which have to be drilled, I bought my car from an OPC two years ago and it had already been drilled so they had been fitted before. Just care and attention when fitting should avoid scratches and a touch up with a brush for when drilling the holes, when extending the warranty remove them for the inspection.

Well, mine turned up and I've offered them up to discover that they aren't remotely the right shape for my car. Looking back at the Zunsport site, they only list 'Boxster S - 1999-2004' which probably explains it as I have a 2004 'S'. The facelift (2003-4?) models have a deeper bumper and therefore taller grilles. The Zunsport folks have been excellent so far and we're currently sending photos to each other. Hopefully they have a facelift version - or perhaps I can volunteer my car to be a guinea pig...

Update - Zunsport Boxster S grilles DO NOT fit the later facelift models and they have no plans to make any. Zunsport have offered me a refund.
Hopefully they can change the website so people don't make the same mistake as me...

They did give me a full refund, so all is good.  A long way to find out they don't fit though...

Update re 3D print for grilles
The first set of grills will be for a 987 Boxster 2005-2008 but the grills can be made for any model providing a template of your intakes we custom design to your size.
Mesh is a standard cross but again the size shape of holes can be changed
Choice of material ABS PLA acrylic ABS glow in the dark yellow green blue.
We are xperimenting wil metal fill.
The fixing method leaves no scratches so can be removed on sale of the car.
There completed and fit really wel but not quite happy with finish yet

I fitted these to my 981, not 100% happy with them and decided to return them.  The service from Zunsport was excellent it was just my choice leaving the look of the car as it was intended.
